Ford 2.7 vs 3.5 vs. 5.0

It occurs to me that I got shockingly good mileage in my Toyota 3.0 when I worked at Yellowstone. Are you at elevation?
I used to get 20-22 with my 04 3.4 double cab, even got 24 a couple of times. My 2019 best I ever got was 18. I'd love to get a new tundra but they still get shit mileage even with a redesign! :mad3:

Why would they improve when their buyers are rich enough to just bend over and take it?
My first Gen tundra has got crappy mileage for 250k with no major repairs. Just maintenance. I sold my 2nd Gen at 143k but same story. Not sure why you think rich people buy toyotas. New trucks are similarly priced across all the manufacturers.

Aren't those almost the same size? Weight might be similar also with the smaller wheels?

I always figured width was the biggest killer with small size increases, but I guess I don't know.
About the same diameter, but around 20% more sidewall to add to the weight.

So my 5.0/10 speed truck has 3.31s. I am considering swapping in axles from a junkyard to get 3.73s with a rear locker. Will it matter much with the 10 speed? I will go to 285s or a bit bigger eventually.

Do you think that you could do it cheaper that way than swapping in something aftermarket like 4.30’s or 4:56’s?

Different truck I know. Good friend of mine has a new 250 with the 7.3 gasser 10 speed and 4.30’s with 35’s. Sounds perfect all the way around empty or towing.

I buy a lot of parts from and am friends with then so $1200ish gets me rear 3.73/locker axle and front ifs 3rd. I can sell my old stuff., presumably.

The lowest gears you can get in 10 speed, a non-raptor is 3.73 which seems strange to me. If they made a Truetrac for the 34 spline 8.8 I might leave the 3.31s in…

The axle shafts in my 12 F150 with 3.73's and an e-locker are pretty stout compared to the ones in my 01 with a V8. I have no idea the spline count on either. 31 for the 01?

My Ram is on 35s and still make 17gpm.

How many of you recalibrate the speedometer in your truck after installing larger tires?
I try to regear or check with gps so I can correct in my head.

Most speedos read a few mph high so going to 285s from 265s or to 35s from 33s makes it read a tiny bit low.

What exactly do you hope to gain by going from a 3.31 to 3.73 with this? Doesn't seem worth any of the work.

Open diff to factory elocker, correct for when I go from 265s to 283s.

I was going to say the same thing, but it sounds like he's wanting the locker and may as well go lower at the same time.
I may just buy an elocker from an axle they have, too. Blown R&P but should be a good locker.

Any chance I can get one of you to throw a tape measure on your fan shrouds and give me the dimensions?

I have a bad idea that involves dropping a newer f150 fan setup into my 79 f250 to help solve low speed cooling problems. Or maybe the fans out of a newer explorer if the truck stuff is going to be too big
I am on my way out of town but I will when I get back Tuesday if no one else has.
