That's such a beautiful drive on I-40 through that area. One of my favorite drives on this planet.
There used to be a house on the side of the mountains you could see from the 40 near the tunnel with a big ass billboard for sale sign. If its still there to begin with I wonder how it held up to this?

My trip is now pushed off a week due to damage and cleanup.

What are you trying to do? There aren’t :that: many alternates through there that won’t suck
Driving a 45 ft RV will stick to the big roads..

checked GPS planned an alt route adds about an hour to the trip,

Was not expecting to see western North Carolina get hit so hard

I don’t think anyone predicted that .

We have family in Highlands NC in Macon County and can’t get in touch with them

Their houses were not in low lying areas , and they are natives so they should have food preps etc . But still worried till we hear from them .

Also have family in Florida near Jacksonville but they all fine .

All the power and phones and cell towers are down .

Wife has 2 nieces & a nephew in Beech Mountain, Boone, & Asheville. Both nieces checked in OK, nephew can't be reached but we're not worried because he's a volunteer firefighter & adrenaline junkie who loves helping folks & will probably keep going until he collapses or a supervisor knocks him out with a 2x4 .

My Dad lives in Santa Rosa Beach and got hit pretty hard by Hurricane Michael. His fancy dock disappeared. Happy that he escaped this storm unscathed, especially since we are hitting the road tomorrow to visit him for a week

The family in Highlands are natives and lives there all their life so they are always prepared for snow etc

But they are also elderly, late 70s early 80s so always concerned about them

My cousin in Black Mountain isn’t such a good prepper ,but hopefully he had food and water for a few days

Most mountain folks do , but he’s not from there and hasn’t been living there but a couple of years

haven’t been able to get in touch with him either .

I hear it's really bad in your cousins area, neighborhoods completely gone and many dead. Hope he's OK. No way to get to some places and no communication.

Floods in mountain terrain are unbelievably destructive.

Family finally heard from my wife's nephew - alive and well, and as we expected, he's working his ass off to help folks out.

Damn, he's a good "kid" (mid 20s, not a kid, I'm just getting old as shit ).

Drone footage of the flooding in Erwin TN. Pretty devastating, they will not completely recover anytime soon.

The town of lake lure is also devastated. Like like the river jumped up into the road and took it and half the town out.
