So, I bought some machine shop tooling from a guy off of FB MP around a week ago. I went there to buy a factory box loaded with reamers with all sizes in their little cutout spot in the wooden box. Turns out the guy sold most all his machine shop he had in a big out building several bay garage on his property. He had left over items still there. So, like the scrounged I am, I see what else I can buy while I’m there. I have it listed in the show your latest tool purchases thread.
As I was getting ready to leave he asked if I wanted a disc sander stand that he had made himself. I said sure as I never turn anything down. He knew I spent all my extra cash I had with me buying stuff from him so he just gave it to me in the hopes I’d finish it up.
That brings us to this thread. I’m putting this heavy ass bad boy stand to use finishing it up. I have an old Rockwell one on its own stand an I love using it. But now with the addition of this thing, I’m moving my old one from my fab shop to my wood shop and use this new one in my fab shop.
That said, I searched eBay for an old Rockwell 12” sanding disc. I found a couple for in the hundreds of $$$ and that’s a nope. I found one reasonable and clickity clicked the buy it now icon.
Now I need a motor, so off I search for that. It has to be 1 HP 1725-1750 rpm’s single phase preferred and a 3/4” diameter shaft. The 3/4” shaft is the hard part to find. There are spacer bushings available but I’m just not crazy about that setup.
I have up on FB MP looking for a motor but mind you, once I’m on a mission, I don’t have the patience to search for months for something like this. It does depend on what I’m doing but overall I’m wired to get it now. None of my connections have the needed motor so I search on eBay. I came across a motor that’ll work at a fair price and not ass rape shipping cost. It’s a 1-1/2 hp 1725 rpm 115v motor with 3/4” shaft. Motor has a four bolt base on it too.
So the disc should show up today maybe and I just ordered the motor today. Once the motor shows up, I’ll adjust the mounting holes in the stand base if they don’t line up and modify the disc guard he made.
I want the guard cover to not go past the face of the 12” disc. He made the guard to hinge back out of the way I guess to make it easier to change out the sand paper. But if I modify it to be like the Rockwell unit, it’ll become ridged to the stand and not pivotable but I’ll make it still bolt on.
After the motor and disc and guard are mocked up, I’ll tear down and paint it. I forgot to mention that I’m going to build a mobile locking caster wheel base for it too.
