What's new

Extra Puma trailer camper specs, please.

You'll be awake.

Ever pulled an RV before? They're not balanced for shit. And to make it more fun next time you'll have water, and it'll be on one side of the axles going out and the other side coming back.

My bumper pull 18' camper is about 8k full of water. I still prefer the weight distributing hitch on my crew cab long box 3500s.
Pulling it dry. It's getting parked to live in for a while and the likely passed on to our neighbors.

Yabut, the average consumer, seeing 2 visibly "identical" new campers, will take Brand Y for $13,299 over Brand X for $13,499. We're not the average consumer; we obsess on the mechanical specs and gloss over the faux-wood comparison on the shiny sales brochure.

Also because panic stops sometimes occur on curves, and a trailer that can actually pull on the hitch under braking (or at least push a lot less) is less likely to upset the ass end of the tow vehicle and push it out into a jackknife condition. Add in wet roads or debris limiting traction, and a trailer that can do its own braking becomes a godsend.
Still, some states require brakes on both axles over 3000 pounds. It might save money to not have to make different trailers for different states

Hope so - the marginal cost of the components and installation greatly increases the safety (and value IMO) of the trailer.

Looking at the chart, only the first three models on each row have 5 lug 3500 lb axles. The rest are, PROBABLY, 6 lug.
Subtract the tongue weight from the gross and if its over 7k, guess what.
It could have 4400lb axles. Those are 6 lug also and different hubs/bearings from 3500 or 5200

Still awaiting a picture of the data plate/sticker on this to get the actual model code.

Got some short vids. Mostly interior stuff. But like I've told my wife, I need to know the axles, weight, etc. for towing this.

Snip of a video that shows the wheels. Kinda looks like two lugs are 180* apart, so 6 lug. Yay? Nay?

5 lug

You would be money ahead to have it shipped to you if you’re going to tow this with your 4Runner .

It lasted this long with those axles should last longer, you should be worried about the roof most campers don't last long cause they leak.

From being brake checked while pulling a loaded gooseneck behind a f350 with enough brakes to stop better than an empty truck alone, I vote for all the brakes you can have . The car load of :mr-t: ahead of me were looking out the back window for the hit and were surprised it didn’t happen. The trailer will actually slide the tires loaded and pull the truck to a stop quick . Having brakes on every wheel is required in some states and it gives some redundancy if one or more isn’t working

The state by state brake requirements are in that RVIA document I linked.

It's a 4Runner.
You're required to leave your brain at the door when you overpay for a sub par SUV that was never designed to tow. :flipoff2:

I mean, at least it has 4cyl power and v-8 gas mileage to compensate for the lack of brake, chassis, and suspension.

Those if us that have put some miles on while towing to have emergency stops and stupid stuff happen just don't know as much as Toyota people. :lmao:

Car haulers generally ship with one axle brakes due to empty weight..

I have owned many, many travel trailers, LOL. And I've never seen one with breaks on only 1 axle. F y i..?.
Im the opposite ive had many and never had brakes on more then one axle... and 95% of the time I didnt have a brake controller so it never mattered

a V8 4runner has bigger brakes than the same vintage silverado 1500....and rear discs to the silverado's drums. It has a frame. The only downsides are wheelbase and coil springs.

Yup. Been using the 4Runner for a few years now. Damn thing is pulling over 7k up big hills around here for materials.

I decided to plead the fifth . I like Jnescher and wish him the best.

My 28' is almost 8k with battery and LP (no water).

From my experience they are never "dry weight" again once someone has owned it. Is it completely empty cooking stuff, bedding, etc etc? Hell, there very well may be a couple hundred lbs of water in the walls and underbelly.

The weight in these things adds up really quickly.

Interior is cleared out aside from mattresses. I'll be checking and emptying tanks if need be. No batteries or LP on it at this time. They used this to roost in while building their cabin. We'll be doing the same.

Currently talking my wife into ordering a helper bag set. Like I was mentioned, I've wanted to put some in for a couple years now. Just don't get more than a few hours to work on her car before I have to pack up and drive it back to town so that she can get to work. Coil springs do suck for towing.

If time allows, a weight distributing hitch would likely make for an easier tow than adding air bags to the back would. A WDH makes the tongue load "act" like it's further forward on the tow vehicle, reducing the unloading of the front axle and giving the tow vehicle more steering authority.

Funny that they were still delivering Taco's with drums up until this latest version.

Yeah, just no interest in getting one only to tow a camper once. Can definitely use the air assist often.
