A customer of mine is moving into a new building. In the computer room was an old Liebert UPS. It was connected but on bypass. I called the number on the unit and it has not been serviced in over 5 years and it no longer supported so we are dumping it. It's way to heavy to get down the stairs in one piece. As i was removing the batteries I noticed that most of them were expanded and i had to pry some of them out. I want to remove some of the other heavier parts but I don't know if I need to worry about any residual power that might zap me. Leibert was no help. Here are some pictures. Any help would be appreciated.

That big copper thing weighs a ton and behind that circuit board is a huge heat sink. The empty shelves are were the batteries were. Am i good to just start cutting away and removing stuff?

Thanks

Yes. Shunt the filter capacitor (big aluminum cylinder) with your screwdriver. That would be the only possibility of retaining a charge, but after all this time it would have bled off. No harm in checking, though. Sell the copper coils - undamaged - on eBay. The Tesla Coil crowd will snap them up. Likewise the big filter cap. It has value.

It has been disconnected from line power for a week now. You are saying that the big coil on the bottom and the ones on the circuit board to save? I'm not sure what the filter cap is.

thanks

all the can things are capacitors
silver one and blue one on the board next door in the first pic
4 black ones in the second pic bussbarred together

short them with a screwdriver and you'll be fine to tear it down

That cap can and will fuck you up. Disconnect it and put a screwdriver (with a plastic/rubber handle!) across the terminals.

Disconnect the four main red wires on the control board and tape them off. Disconnect the wires from the battery to the xformers and tape them off. After that, take it apart. Those little brown caps might need to be discharged too but they look like 1/2 to 1 farad so not really anything to write home about.

Bleed the caps and you’ll be fine. If you miss one you’ll know but live.

If it feels like a wasp stung the back of your hand & your nuts jump up into your throat for a second, it's just a capacitor you missed
Now I'm really looking forward to tearing this thing down this weekend. Maybe I'll just let it sit another week. lol

you sir are brave or dumb asking this could-kill-you question to this crowd
have someone dial 9-1- before you reach in there:laughing:

We had a creepy old "Battery Man" maintain our UPS. We had a boat load of 12V batteries connected in series for 500+ VDC. One cell shorted out to the frame and faulted out. "Battery Man" goes to disconnect it and is slammed to the floor. Shitty shorted battery formed a path to ground!. YMMV:smokin:
