Anyone ever build one from scratch? Looking at building a 7ft insert that allows for my transfer tank to remain in the bed.

Is it at all possible to achieve a good dump angle with a single non-telescoping ram? Scissors are the obvious option but are a little hard to find and guys typically want too much for them. There are a couple 5ft cylinders for sale locally. If I could get away with a vertical 5ft ram and achieve dump angle that would be great (and easy). Have most of the steel for the frame and bed, plan is to mount it into my gooseneck ball. A guy locally has an electric pump I'm going to check out today for a good price. I could make scissors but prefer not to, if I could find some for $100 I'd be all over it. The other problem is a lot of them have a thick profile because they come off a frame mounted bed.

Thanks

Can't post pictures normally for some reason, can only use the attach files function. Anyways, mocking up the frame and hinges.

Building side rails and getting the scissors mounted. Going to have a cab over portion to protect the roof of the truck as well. So far all scrap iron but may need to get a couple sticks of angle iron.

Got the tailgate framed as well as the bed sides. Needs some cross members welded in and some additional bracing. Pretty square for the material I am working with.

Finished up with the exception of paint and a dump switch. Holds 2yd of loose material (mulch in this case) and was able to dump 1yd of wet beach sand (over 2100lb). Was worried about the dump angle but the floor has a good angle to clear the scissors so it works out great.

It's bad enough that it would turn me away from calling that guy. Make it look like it's a kid or a Mexican that either wayis going to hit my house or fence with something :flipoff2:
I set my price point higher than what guys like you are willing to pay so no worries. :flipoff2:

I’m not married to it, the other option is black, which happens to be the easiest to paint. The area I live in and the people who I do most work for eat it right up. Everyone here is on vacation.

You put a load in it yet?
Need pics:smokin:

Hauled 2yds of top soil while pulling the tractor. Truck did well with it, somewhere around 4000lb give or take. Found out I had a bad ground when I went to dump it and had to use a shovel. The truck has airbags and overloads so it barely squats. 6 speed, 4.30 gears and VGT turbo does a great job. Especially in my area, lots of slow speed and big hills.

Hauled 2yd of beach sand with it today. Took out some cedar trees and refreshed a guys private beach at his cottage. Almost dumped it in one shot, got about 60% lifted and stalled about. Up enough that a lot of sand slid out pretty easy and was able to dump the rest no problem. Not bad for an old pump with unknown history. Then hauled 4 loads of cedar to the pit before grinding all the stumps.

My first thought was that old farmer dude who has retired from farming, but wants everyone to know he is still a John Deere guy...

Still rocking the JD color scheme. The tires I had were from 2011 and started throwing chunks. I replaced them with some super aggressive drive tires. 245/70r19.5 is the perfect height at a little over 33". These tires have 5/8" tread depth so getting around should be no issue.

Curious how you like them. My experience with aggressive 19.5s on F550s is that they wear absolutely terrible and sound like boggers in a few thousand miles.

Maybe they'll be better on a lighter pickup?

That's aggressive? Looks like a standard highway tire.

My definition of "standard" would be along the lines of a Continental HDR. There are only a few options for a full blown "mud" tire and they start getting into the $500/ea range.

Just found this thread :homer:

I love the low buck dump insert.. I’ve considered something like that before, but now I have a dump trailer.. although, a flatbed dump is on the wish list for an OBS F-350 I’ve got sitting around.
