So ol' boy tried to make one too many friends today, came back to the porch with a stain on his chest and reeking of skunk. I've given him two frothy baths with Dawn so far, but joker is definitely sleeping outside tonight.

What's the magic cure?

Didn't take a pic at the time, but here he is back when I still liked him.

After Elliot got sprayed we put together a kit.

We were in Oregon when he met a skunk the first time, our youngest was staying at the house to watch him. Fortunately we had someone on the property to help her de-skunk the pup.

Everything, including rubber gloves is in the kit. The shampoo is whatever you want to use after the other steps.

That's a great idea. Thanks. I'll make up a couple of these to keep at the places we go. I'd like to think he learned his lesson, but he's not exceedingly bright.

Baking soda 1/4 cup
Hydrogen peroxide 1 quart
Dish soap 1 tablespoon

No water.. scrub em down real good. Rinse and shampoo if he lives inside.. it’ll make the smell “tolerable”

Edit: added quantities
Thanks man. I appreciate it.

That recipe works, but any time he gets wet for the next 3 months you're going to smell it. But it won't rub off on anything in the house, at least. Happened to two of my dogs in the past.

Oh man. After trying everything we figured out what works best but damn I can’t remember it. You need to cut the oil. Maybe it was simple green and dawn. This was a weekly issue for a summer. Grandmas tomato juice is not the best way.

Last time one of ours got skunked, it was cold out. My dad always used tomato juice. I didn’t have any, so instead, She got a quick bath with a tomato/green Chile mixture (almost like cheap spaghetti sauce). Cut the smell better than I figured, and when she got wet, she smelled like chili’s.
Ymmv

I tried something from Walmart that was made specifically for this task

… kinda worked

What did the trick was simple green and then mane and tail shampoo x3

… fawker went right out and found the skunk again

The problem was solved with a little lead
( the skunk, not the dawg  )

Fuck all that. ^ Natures miracle for skunk. This shit works.

This is the only thing I've ever found that kinda works on the animals.

When our furniture was skunk sprayed in the garage for a few months, this was the only stuff that got the smell out of the wood.

Your kit is much more fancy than mine.. I should consider an upgrade

Just last week we needed it.. 02:00 gf comes into the bedroom and wakes me up.. “hey, the dogs got skunked.. what do I do now? “
as I hear one of the dogs following her into the bedroom.. :homer::barf:

Got em washed up and I was back in bed by 03:00

Skunk spray is oil based, so the Dawn emulsifies it for removal. Plain water just moves it all around. Used to have a Beagle that loved to sniff out the skunks. Kinda burned out my nose and skunk smell doesn't bother me much anymore. That Skunk Kit recipe works the best I have found.

We’ve done this more times than I can count, and it works great.
