Documenting my kids mx career on irate

Awesome! We spend a lot of time at that track with the kids. It’s fun just watching all the little ones battle it out!

Well, I was gonna go with a Razor dirtbike since the reviews seem to be decent. They're just shy of 50lbs, so Im pretty sure he cant pick it up, but he's done great with learning to ride his bicycle with no training wheels because he started on a stryder.

I only want to go electric because Im not home during the week and mom with a gas engine is a bad idea.
My 2 year old wont even ride our razor we were given when the 12" stacyc batterey is dead. Hed rather push himself with his feet. They really are complete garbage

Is there anything comparable to a pw size-wise? Most 50s were still too big for my kid
2nd this. Great way to start em out and they can ride them all sorts of place people don't let motos go... like the local park.
Stay on the stacyc till XR/CRF50 size (unless that leaves a sizeable gap). The xr is a great size to get started on, not saying there's such a thing as too young, but that start point worked out well for me. Aside from that, he's gonna outgrow the first few bikes like every 6 months, so no rush.

Yeah i think a ktm 50 will be next
Great choice, I did some damage on one a those back in the day :flipoff2:

He didnt really start pushing it till a 6ish year old girl came out on her jr50. He was just watching till I told him that she was trying to race... then all bets were off. She was fast so it was good for my kid.

Bear in mind there are several flavours of KTM50. The mini50 is what my kid's main competition in the hare scrambles rides, and it's a major step up from every other option. Proper suspension that can actually be tuned is huuuuge when it needs to work for a 35-70lb kid. Just think of a 150lb guy on a bike valved for a 300 pounder, or vice versa! Every other kids bike I've seen is just springs.

That's funny. My kid keeps pointing and asking if there is a motor in there.

Is that the fox v1 helmet? Did you get it for him locally? My kids got a fat head so I'm scared of ordering online without him trying them on
My 7 year old barely fits an adult small helmet.

Try on was my big thing as well. It has to fit properly.

My kid is getting the stacyc 16 on thanksgiving (early birthday gift from grandpa) so he can ride with his cousins. middle speed is 7.5 mph anf top speed is 13 mph. I’m going to look for a helmet this week. Any advice on what to look for? I assume a motorcycle shop will have what I need, but maybe a bike shop has something better for a 5 year old. I don’t know what prices are.

I have eyeballed a few PW 50s for a while. They’re $1,000 all day long. Used. Those who buy them want all the money they spent back so they can move up. It’s nuts what they sell for.

my old lady has spent too much money on helmets. and i know that sound dumb. i kept mine in lighter weight bycycle helmets, only now at 5yo is he starting with the heavy moto type helmet. i dont think there is any perfect choice. the big helmets where to much at first.

gotta keep an eye out for a long time to get a deal on a small bike.but they do come up. (some that look terrible, can be a whole new bike with less than $100 is plastic kits) even after my kids outgrow them, i'm going hold onto them for awhile its a famn good time running laps around the pace with a couple buddies. and another guy i know regularly goes to a parking lot to 'stunt' his crf50 with a group. we're too old to get hurt doing dumb shit on big bikes.

shitty pic, good times.

tracyb the ‘I’m going to keep it so I can keep up’ part is why they’re so expensive. Early 2000s everyone was putting taller bars and big bore kits in them and called them ‘pit bikes.’ Now dad just wants to keep it after the kids out grew it for shits and giggles, or wants $800+ for a 15 year old bike.

Since he is 5 I’m hoping he has the neck strength for any helmet I buy.

Both my 5.5 year old and my 2.5 year old are rocking the Fox v1 youth helmet in a YS(youth small) size.
Fox Racing 2021 Youth V1 Helmet With MIPS - Revn

When they're younger they're a bit more of a bobblehead for sure, but they seem to work it out alright. They both got their helmets around 2 years old. Having a chinbar helps a lot with full blown whisky throttles into bushes when they're first learning to ride. If it's not a tech dirt trail, my 5.5 year old wears his mountain bike half lid now, but he's really confident on his stacyc.

My kid uses a Bell Sanction helmet on his Stacyc. He's 4 and the small is getting a bit tight on him, so he's getting a medium for Christmas.

It's technically a BMX helmet, so it's really light. My local mountain bike shop had them in stock.

The stacyc is about a million times better than the razor. It's not even close.

My 2 1/2 year old learned to stand up on his push bike because he was doing it on his 12" stacyc first.
x whatever

I think the Razors are probably fine cheap bikes for older kids that can ride and want to go terrorize the neighborhood or paved campground. I don't think they're good bikes for teaching young kids to ride.

On/off throttle is intimidating for littles. They're too heavy/wide to be used as a push bike.

Some of the guys I trail ride with on full size bikes have started switching to downhill mountain bike helmets for the more techy stuff. Waaaaaay more ventilation than most dirt bike helmets and they are saying the designs are better suited to the crashes/speeds likely to be seen on trail rides.

Yeah it’s great when someone’s a bit faster and makes ya work for it. My boy just turned 7 and stepped up from his ttr50 to a ttr90. He’s loving it. Trying to get him on some trails but he likes to run laps on that track and the intermediate track. Maybe we’ll see ya out there.

Yeah, my kid actually wants to be out on the trails. We did the lowerfield loop all the way up top and back around followed by rancho up and camp road down. Halfway down he got mad and threw a fit that his hands were hurting to bad to hang on... so we took a lunch break and then he rode the track for a while before leaving.

Man this thread brought back some memories. You are in for the BEST times of your life. I started my oldest at 4 on the xr below. tried the training wheel route and he rode smack into the side of the garage. Put the bike away until the next year, he was 5. Took off the trainers and he was off to the proverbial race and never looked back. Both boys went thru the 50, then a ttr90, then a senior pro 50(highly dont recommend that for a un-seasoned rider) a cr80, ktm 110, then onto big bikes mostly all orange. we raced all around kansas in hare scrambles. Built (or had built by Motokazi track builders) a half mile moto track in our back yard. A lot of learning happened there. We rode dual sport stuff in most of the midwest, lots of memories. They are older now and getting everyone together to ride is getting harder. The oldest and I had two trips this fall, still great times. Enjoy it guys, these times pass by real quick.

Nice. My kid was ripping around our property 2ish weeks ago and then asked me if he was good enough to race yet. I guess im going to have to fib about his age for the 2023 hare scramble season, let him take off last, and follow him.

If you look close at one of my pics you see an "E" on the number plate. that was from me escorting my youngn on harescramble courses. Good times

edit to add: I still have that xr50. Bought new in 2001, hauled home in the back seat of mazda 626 with 2 car seats back there too. :lmao: its currently on loan to my mechanic, he's teaching his 5 year to ride.

Hahahah we’ve had a couple trips up with him throwing a fit crying saying he can’t do it but then he does it crying! Hopefully it’s better out there for him on the 90 with bigger tires. Some of those whoops will swallow a 50!

My 4yo is outgrowing his 12" Stacyc and getting a 16" Stacyc for Christmas. He currently wears a full face BMX helmet and gloves. Sometimes knee pads. He rides the same places, at the same speeds, and crashes about as often/hard on his pedal bike as he does his Stacyc. He just wears a bike helmet on his pedal bike.

Should I be getting him MX boots? What gear do your kids wear on their Stacyc?

Let em rock whatever they feel for the stacyc. Personally I like it when they don't wear funky boots because when you eventually end up pulling over for them to play on something, they're not falling all over themselves in stiff mx boots.

My oldest is at the point that unless he's riding something gnarly, I let him rock a mt. bike half lid and some gloves. When he first started I made him wear knees and a chest protector, but he never really needed em. These days I let him decide.

Awsome deal. The extra battereys and helmets were probably close to what you paid for everything

We still have the XR50 I bought my son when he was 4 (10 years ago), and the TRX90 quad we bought a couple years later. Both of those machines have taught countless kids and adults how to pilot an atv in my back yard. In fact, the little XR wasn't even in our possession for about 3 years before we got it back from a friend of mine, and then went right back out on loan again to another buddy so his daughter could give it a go.

I bought that little XR for $500, and I know I could get that now if I put it up for sale, but it makes me so happy to keep it as a loaner so my friend's and family's kids have something to learn on.
