Do you speak a foreign language.

Do you find it useful?

How did you learn?

I speak some broken Mexican I picked up living on the South Side of Houston, but not enough to understand native speakers at native speed.

I’d kinda like to learn enough to run a good job site in Texas.

And also Japanese interest me, but learning is kind of a pointless exercise in learning it.

I speak french very, very poorly, but I like to think that I sound like Antonio Banderez when I'm speaking to the french women.

Been trying to learn it for over 20 years, but the old cabbage must be dried out.:homer:
When I met my girlfriend over 20 years ago, she didn't speak english and I didn't speak french.

Unfortunately she's picked up a lot of english over the years. I love my exotic import.

English, Spanish, French.....

English, because....duh.

Spanish, because I come from a Southern California Hispanic family. English and Spanish conversations would sometimes meld into "Spang-lish" at times.

French, because I took 4 years in High School, and 1 in College. French is very similar to Spanish in terms of sentence structure, feminine/masculine structure, and a lot of the words are easy to decipher between Spanish/French. I picked it up real easily because of that....

Having moved to Georgia, I still use Spanish frequently in dealing with my Landscapers, misc workers. Keeps them on their toes around me. I also translate for my neighbors when they too have to deal with Landscapers and misc workers. This keeps me in practice.

French is hit and miss because I don't find much opportunity for it. I'll watch French based movies just to keep me up on things.

I do answer unknown number calls in Spanish just to mess with them. They usually hang up on me. The few times the telemarketers scramble to find someone that speaks Spanish to deal with me, I start speaking French. They usually hang up on me by then....

I was reasonably fluent in Spanish for about a year, lived in south America for a bit and was able to operate completely solo. Now I'll hear something or someone will say something to me in Spanish and I'll have a 30 second to 2 minute delay on what they said and I'll translate it in my mind. Also Mexican isn't Spanish it's almost as fucked as Argentinian for anyone that's not a native speaker. :flipoff2:

Was decently good in German (took several years of it in high school, been there a couple times since) but it's very rusty from years of non-use at this point. Getting progressively less useful too as most Germans speak English. The only time I've actually needed German in this century was in a toy shop in Belgium, the proprietor didn't speak English and I don't speak Dutch or French, but we both could muddle in German.

English then at school
Afrikaans (13 years but honestly only became proficient in the military) which allows a basic understanding of German, a decent understanding of Dutch and a good understanding of Flemish
French 2 years at high school. Extreme basic proficiency - try to hold basic conversation with the French drivers I know to practice
Zulu 2 years at high school, but with zero practice I lost most of my vocabulary

Then I came to the US and had to learn ‘Merican. :lmao:

Smattering of Spanish. Wish I would make more effort to be proficient.

A wise man once told me you only have to know three phases in any language to get laid

Where is the cold beer?
Where are the hot women?
Where is the bathroom?

The live translation apps make getting laid in any country a lot easier today than 30 years ago

My foreign language is English :flipoff2:

My mother language is Spanish / Castillian. Yes, it does come in handy quite often, although Castilian sounds strange to many on this side of the Atlantic. :flipoff2:

Spanish and German, comes in handy for spam calls...

Spanglish. Learned in the field. I have two crews that speak little to no English. It makes managing them interesting at best.

English, American Infantrymen, and sarcasm.

I took German in 7th grade through high school. In my senior year I was in a AP German class. I have forgotten most of it now :homer:

Speak enough Spanish to get by, understand more than I can speak :homer:

Otherwise, just a little bit of whatever country I've been to. It's a helpful start.

I had a gal in poland who spoke no English, asked if I spoke German, I responded in hindi that I don't and asked if she spoke hindi

Hilarity ensued, and we quickly found an English speaking pole :flipoff2:

Also learned about Google translate, that joker works pretty decent. Lots of stuff doesn't translate, but it is effective
