My obs is really showing it's age. I love the truck but I spend more time working on it that driving it and to keep it looking showroom nice it's getting more and more costly.

I've been debating a second generation super duty. Not new enough to have all the gadgetry i hate, but new enough to have modern power and modern comfort. I know the early triton motors got a bad rap but I think all that was sorted out with the later models.

I picked up a 02' after I sold my diesel and toy hauler. It does perfectly fine for my needs I'm not towing heavy anymore. I've only found myself wanting a newer v10 for a trans with more gears, and the radius arm front end.

Mine is a mostly clean lariat (seats are wearing), but I've added headers, fixed the y pipe that choked the early years, and I replaced coil pack and plugs. Never spit a plug, truck pulls well for what it is.

I'm going to re-gear it at some point to make up for the 4r100, it will need a AC compressor next year, probably do the seats over the winter.

I think the early rigs got a bad rap for spitting plugs , and the later years for plugs breaking off. I think A lot of that was improper torque on changing plugs on the 2v, and waiting too long on the 3v plus a two piece plug.

I've only know folks who had good luck, my old man ran both his hard towing after he got away from oil burners. Literally lived in them traveling with rvs hooked up in early retirement.

i've got a '13 ccsb 6.2 with 4.30 gears. picked it up a few years ago for $12k with just under 200k... I mostly use it towing a 5th and around 22k gcw. its mostly good except some of the 6k ft passes really suck the power out.

the truck i'm keeping an eye out for is an f450/550 with a V10. I want a 12ft bed and the deeper gears.

I don't know anyone that's had a V10 truck and wasn't happy with it. its mostly internet 'experts' that think they have the same problems as the 5.4.

Get it, with your parts store biz no worries on keeping it going.
Timely oil changes and maintenance, I see no reason why it would not last.

I own dreaded 5.4 3v, oil and filter changes every 3k and it purrs. Slow and steady it goes...

They’re not terrible motors but the mpg will be consistently not great. Manifolds are the biggest problem on the ones I’ve owned. I’d buy another one and actually might if I can find a coil front dually

I have a v10 in my class A motorhome. It has crossed the scales with a trailer at 28k. It's pulls fine just a little slow. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a v10 in a truck.

I've got an 05 v10+zf6+4.30 truck.

It gets 10mpg pretty constantly according to the dash. I don't really care enough to hand calculate it, trucks aren't for mpg's

I like it a lot. Though I do miss turbodiesel noises, and the interior is dated.

I'll probably swap some f450 pickup axles into it and add a flatbed and keep it forever

Tough, drinks the fuel, goes nowhere fast, that's about it. I'd run one if the price was right.

My 460 gets 8 mpg. Hard to do worse than that
My 01 F350 CC LB dually with an auto and 4.30 gears gets pretty much a consistent 7MPG if pulling anything more than 4000 pounds. Might get 9-10 otherwise. I try to drive it as easy as I can…but it still has to feed 10 cylinders.
I need to do exhaust manifold bolts/studs…but it’s needed that done for years and I just haven’t taken the time to do them.
Love everything about it, other than the 4 speed. Been researching a 6R80 swap, but haven’t gotten very far yet.
I’ve grossed over 30k before and had no idea I was loaded that heavy until I rolled across the scales to check the weight. Pulled it just fine.

Bought a 01 v10 and a 06 v10 new. Ordered the 06 with 4.10s, they both lived on 35s and averaged about 12 mpg empty after the 10% ethonal bullshit. Coil packs on the 01 was the only issue. Both had tunes, k&n and exhaust. Never had them over 100k miles.

Looking for a newer V10 xcab 550 to put a flatbed dump body on is eluding me in the Northeast. At least without dropping 70k.
Add a v-plow into that and it’s not a reality for this house.

Have an 06 4x4 f450 with 200k miles

towed my 32ft gooseneck with an m2 freightliner without an issue. Stopped on a dime too.

I am a definite fan. x2 on tramps, 5.4 can suck it.

I never buy a vehicle on this side of the Mississippi.
