I am building a narrow track wheeler (56"), I don't want to build a totally purpose build car hauler BUT if I build a narrower axle trailer what are my major draw backs?
I was splitting a car hauler and it was just recently sold, I wanted to buy out my partner on it but that didn't happen so...

This former trailer was 102" wide outside to outside of the fenders and storing such a wide trailer at my house was problematic.

  • If I made a really narrow trailer with out fenders (deck over?) I could use around a 60" wms axles but the Jeep would be sitting pretty high
  • 73" wms I could squeeze between the fenders I imagine
I assume my formerly owned trailer was 82" WMS due to the fender width. Ideally, if I was to build a garage I want to tuck it into a 8ft wide gap between the fence and garage. I could shift the building over 2ft more but that is really eating into the back yard.

Narrow trailer axles more susceptible to tail wagging?

If it can crawl an rock it can crawl a fender. Trailer I built is like 84" wide to match buggys.
I 100% agree with your mindset, but I was thinking if I wanted to put a car on it... I'm not opposed to drive over fenders BUT a car definitely couldn't drive over those ^. Do you have a measurement for the width between the fenders? Your trailer might be too low for around here LOL we have logging roads to get down, KOH entrance is a walmart parking lot by comparison LOL

If you want to put a car on it your only option would be deckover which makes it taller... Which makes loading a car tougher unless you add a dovetail and long ramps.

I've never seen a deckover tilt but that might be an option too.

I feel like this could be a good compromise between lower deck height and narrower width. I'm sure a low car would still hit if I went too narrow. But a 84" deck width set up with a low pro driver over fender does not seem like it's outside the realm of possibility?

I guess it all depends on the car. Stock height sedan with normal 60 series tires? Sure. Sports car on low suspension with wide 30 series tires? Nope.
 
Copy UHaul's dimensions, just make the left fender flip down or removable:

Their older (orange deck) ones had a 74" wide deck.

I've hauled it down some old mining area roads without problem, it's low but also not long so breakeven isn't that bad. I'm in process of swapping the drop beams out of my 20' enclosed for that reason since it drags. I'm 50" between fenders. Beat part about it is no one can borrow for other uses.
