I’ve got a new dewalt 20v brushless 3 speed drill/hammer drill that I’ve used maybe 5 times. I was using it last night to drill holes with a 13/16” ship auger in a stump and noticed that it won’t start with any load in the two higher speeds. As in I can hold the chuck with my hand and it makes a clicking sound won’t start. If I get it spinning first in high it’ll run the bit in a foot as fast as I can go. It may have been doing it out of the box and I’ve never noticed since it’s probably been in low it’s whole life. Batteries are all new as well.

Any ideas? Google wasn’t any help.

Turn the collar to drill mode? It’s prolly set at 2-3 so it’s just slipping clutch

This got me on my m18 fuel drill. The clicking I'm used to, but the fuel just kills power. With 3 helper kids the drill is pretty popular, I had cussed that drill so many times only to find out it was me

It's not the clutch, it acts like the batteries dead. Light flickers and there's an electronic clicking sound kinda like a starter solenoid with a dead battery. As soon as it's spinning all the power in the world, that auger bit has 12" flights and I wasn't going easy on it. But any load on it and I just get the clicking when I pull the trigger.

this, I'd borrowed one of those and it kept acting like a dead battery
fucking thing just won't let me load it down
well okay maybe it's the lawyer model "new feature! now without wrist snapping torque!"
I'm cursing at the thing and the guy I borrowed it from finally walks over laughing at me and fixes it.

Update: I got ahold of the dewalt service guy I use at work and he said they’ve see a few issues with the firmware causing issues like I’m having out of the box. Going to bring it by tomorrow and if it seems like the issue they’ll give me a new one. Apparently they get programmed at the factory through the battery connection.

Who ever thought we would be discussing firmware and handheld drills.
