Day 42 and my camper tried to kill me

Due to the circumstances of a bitter divorce, my present accommodations for the next 42 days is in my camper on my friends land. Not too shabby in reality. I bought the camper new last year and never really used anything aside from the A/C. Never put water in it, pissed or shit in or even turned the gas on. So last night I decide to get the shower up and running. Fuckin thing didn't come with an owners manual but I remember the guy telling me to flip a switch on the water heater and turn the gas on. So I open the hatch and wait for this thing to magically light and get to heating my water. Nothing. As I am sitting there looking, I notice it has an electrical element. I also noticed the A/C was no longer on. So I go reset the breaker and same thing. Hook it to the generator and the generator says there is a ground fault. I am tired and about half pissed and just go to bed. One hour later I wake up to the worst sounding alarm ever. I am fumbling for my Iphone and thinking that I have never heard it make this alarm. Find the Iphone and it says "not me." I stumble out of bed to find the some alarm near the floor shrieking like a banshee and decide it is more important for it to stop making the noise than to wonder why. I started realizing I have a bit of a headache and it smells funny in the camper. Check the stove and one of the burners were on but not lit. Apparently someone must have bumped the knob and I filled the camper with propane. So....I think I will make sure the gas bottles are turned off before I go to bed from now on.

As a PSA, don't ever buy a Gray Wolf camper. For something barely used, it sure has gone to hell in a hand basket fast, couple of outlets quit working, obviously a ground on the water heater that was never used and who the fuck sells campers with no goddamned manuals??

If you're going to run the water heater on propane make sure you opened the tank valve then light your stove pilot or an eye on the stove first. It'll prime faster for the water heater to light.

You were almost there:lmao:

this story reminds me of when Hobie almost killed himself with his farts at KOH

I am counting down, not forwards. 42 days until I get to reclaim my house. And yeah, I guess my camper did save me from killing myself. I will sleep much better tonight for looking at it that way. Appreciate the positive view.

In my defense, I never saw or heard that alarm before. lol

This. Also, check the hot water heater burner chimney/exhaust for spiderwebs and dirt dobbers.

Well, the alarm works. :flipoff2:

If you bought it brand new, check with the dealer. It's not uncommon for the manuals to not be available on brand new models when they first release.

You think she's gonna leave quietly on day 42?

you've got at least 6 mortgage payments to make from that camper:flipoff2:

Man, I seriously hope not. But then again that dumbass judge let her move back in for 45 days....

Well, there's some things you can do, but you probably need to take dirtys suggestion in the other thread and park your trailer in the trailer park and let the trailer park boys help you through it

I remember when I was a kid, my parents bought their first camping trailer ever and didn't really know much about em other than that my dad wanted to camp and my mom wanted a shower.

We stayed at campground at the base of snow summit in Big Bear with no hookups. Half way through the middle of the night the gas alarm starts freaking out, so we all scramble out of the trailer and run across the street. We stood there in the freezing ass air at 2am listening to the gas alarm go off waiting for the whole thing to go up in a fiery ball for about half an hour before my dad finally loses patience and declares he's going inside. "Dad! No!" I think he's going to die. My mom just looks scared. He walks up and opens the door like he's part of a bomb defusal unit and sniffs around inside. Right when he turns around to declare he smells no propane, the alarm gives a pitiful half squawk and dies. No one ever told us that if you run the battery down, the gas alarm with lose its shit. Good times.

I remember when I was a kid, we had a propane leak in the bus we lived in. Everyone asleep (except Dad), cruising down the highway, big fireball. Everyone bailed out, standing on the side of the road screaming, looking down at the shreds of cooked skin hanging off all my exposed arms and legs.

Appreciate your alarm.

Couple of tips-if you lose 12v power none of the propane will work as all the circuit boards utilize it; even if plugged into 120v. Also if the camper does have a power management system or surge guard you may have to trick the system. Google “Edison plug” then make one and plug it into the generator. It makes the camper see a bonded ground & neutral. In a park the bond is at the pedestal but on a portable gennie you have to do this. Been rving for years & fulltime for 5 years. My Yamaha & Honda each have a plug installed in a 110 outlet.

Pics or it didn’t happen. :flipoff2:

You think you're getting the house back:laughing:

Funniest thing in this thread.

Sorry about your house buddy.

You mean this? It's what I use on my Honda gennie.

The heater, water heater, stove, and fridge are all branded stuff that has manuals. Probably a lot of Dometic stuff or whatever brands are popular.

There are a million camping, vanlife, gypsy forums to ask around. Take pictures, post.

If Britanny the 19 year old Vanlife thot can figure it out, I'm not sure I'd post on IBB about how I almost gassed myself with a toy furnace.
