so if I'm driving down the highway in my auto trans vehicle and the motor stalls, will I wreck the transmission if I don't shift to neutral while I coast to a stop?

Depends on if you spend a few miles coasting down a mountain before you get to that stop.

There's bearings in there that depend on steady dribble of lube.
