Daily Driver tool kits - what do you carry?

Last time my family needed to usa AAA, they waited for about 3 hours just for AAA to tell them they cannot help on a toll road.
I’ve never heard anything like that. Here in Cali if that were to happen caltrans would atleast get you off the rd and somewhere safe.

I work for a tow company as a diesel mechanic and we never turn down any calls. AAA may classify a call wrong , if it’s off road or a recovery instead of a tow. We won’t turn anything down.
Maybe they were AAA tow trucks and not one that supports them? Shitty situation that I’m sure cost way too much.

I keep this set in the car Amazon.com
Some pliers, screw driver and random tools that have followed me around. Throw a blanket or jacket in also.

I really should toss a couple valve stems in each glove box. I've lost one on the road before and the "break the bead with the rotor" trick applies there too.
Or just get the ones you can install from the outside.

I still have a couple but they are hard to find now

Daily I carry more survival gear than anything. People get lost out old logging roads around here and aren't found for a year or more....
My dd has a few safety blankets, 2 pretty good ($200ish) first aid kits, quick clot, Israeli bandages, 2-3 diving style led flashlights, lil water n food, binos, range finder, pistol and a long gun, few lighters, couple different types of fire starter, snow and mechanics gloves, extra sleeping bag, extra wool jacket, 30' strap and enough tools to swap a wheel/ tire.

I want a winch but that's gonna cost a bit.

Oh and I carry a fire extinguisher, plug kit, first aid kit, water, some food like protein bars, guns, ammo, fishing gear...yeah...I do.

In one of the trucks.

The others not as much. But close.

:flipoff2:

DD car has a Bluetooth obd2 Dongle, knife, crescent, zip ties, breaker bar, tire socket, HF aluminum floor jack. If it dies I get home and get the truck/trailer.

I used to work out of the truck and never had the patience to find a mechanic if something went wrong. It has pretty much everything I can think of, biggest weather guard box they make stuffed mostly full of tools and some fluids.

... fixed that for folks near big and/or democrat cities

It didn't use to be like that, but along the colorado frontrange, the people are not what they used to be
Not so much here. Probably because a fair amount of us carry.

East coast, toll roads have a towing contract, most of those aren't aaa, why aaa can't pay the toll and hook you up I've no idea... well I know it's all money.

We're talking survival gear too? Shit, the bag to left of my picture (earlier post) is a "go bag". It contains everything from extra mags, rain gear, energy bars, water, first aid kit vodka bla bla bla..

Under the back seat of the Jeep, recovery gear not shown but also under the seat. I need to lose a couple things and add a couple.

Anyone carry an extra oil filter?

I changed the oil/filter on my taco yesterday and found the oil filter was loose. Not leaking, but definitely not tight. I'm the one who last changed it and know for a fact I had it tight. Would suck bad to loose that and have no way of replacing it on the trail.

Most of the time I need a wrench to get the filter off. So no I've never carried one when I've wheeled or traveled.

Towing is all about the money. You should see some of the rates for towing busses, tractor trailers and such. It’s astronomical. The huge money is cleaning up accidents. We have part or i5 north of Sacramento and on 99. Some of the bills to cleanup a semi accident get to be 12k to roughly 22k on avg. There was a semi hauling red wood cut lumber next to clear lake and it went into the water. We recovered the semi and trailer, all the lumber. That bill was over 100k and insurance paid it! I know it’s specialized and takes knowledge and risk but I feel bad some of the time. Some times I wish we could charge more for some of the dumb ass truckers. I’m happy I get to wrench most of the time and not tow.

No but in the diesels I carry fuel filters if I'm going out of town.

Basic tools and anything specific to the rig the tools are in. Like if I drove a newer fiat I'd carry torx since they love them so much. Nothing crazy needed most of the time.

Don't forget the legalized theft part of the business model.

TL: DR Anyone have any life changing advice in here or is every 3rd post a pic of harbor freight tool kits?

I'm pretty sure this is just a campfire conversation. If you need life changes then you sir, need a doctor, a lawyer, or a preacher :flipoff2:

You'd be surprised how often a campfire conversation turns into a half way decent idea around here.

I carry too much, although ready to for any rescue mission. Kids, employees and a wife.

Cleaning supplies for truck, extra set of boots and change of clothing. Never know when I'll be sent out of town, for family or business.

Thank you for prompting me to sort thru this. I noticed I'm missing my Tupperware full of tire repair supplies.

"new" Daily means setting up a new tool kit. I carried almost nothing in the 06' Civic. Planning to carry a little more in the new-to-me 04' GX470

Generally I've been across the board. from nothing, to what I'd call the junkyard trip kit, basically a full 3/8,1/2" socket set, full plier set, full screwdriver set, breaker bar, vise grips, tie wraps, electrical crimps, etc. Usually the overflow/extras I had from my main garage box made it up.

Thinking this time around it's gonna be
  • 1/4 3/8 socket set. this one looked nice and organized for the price and the through sockets should hopefully cover the need for deep sockets Amazon.com $40 made me bite
  • vise grips, slip jaw pliers, linemans pliers
  • zip ties
  • phillips/flathead screwdriver for the spots the one in the above kit won't reach
  • jump pack or cables
  • shitty HF multimeter

suspect a lot of people are in the "nothing, I have AAA boat. but I'm sure some carry the full junkyard kit
We've had an 06' GX470 since 2010 and have put over 200k on it. (Has 245k now bought at 38k) and honestly all you'll need is jumper cables and the kit in the back of the door. I've been able to get it home everytime with that simple kit. Has pliers, screwdriver, everything to get tires off and a couple of other things I haven't used. Biggest issue I've had is it likes to eat batteries have gone through one every 3 yearish and one alternator during that time. Everything else is just basic maintenance they you can usually put off. It's pretty overbuilt in most areas. You will need to do the timing belt every 90-100k other than that oil changes and brake pads.

Those blow-mold kits aren't very compact.

I've very seldom needed 1/4" stuff. 3/8 fits 98% of the time.

And these are my go-tos for versatility.

what'
s with the vee shaped vise grip?
looks like it'd poorly fit about five sizes of hex nuts

Well I was not entirely correct on my first post.

Found a fuse and 10mm wrench to change the fuse for the amps in the glovebox. Priorities.
