Classic and RTI have had them for a while, going on a year, maybe more. RTI is even doing some restoration and selling them at a premium.

Best as I can tell they all came out of Africa, Classic is pretty vague, leaving it as specific as the continent of Africa, RTI gets as specific as saying they're from Ethiopia. I believe I.O. imported them, at least they imported mine - more on that later.

Here's a single example, a Quality Hardware bought from Classic Firearms. It was a birthday gift, it's a wonderful and thoughtful gift, I am very pleased to have it, and don't want anyone to think otherwise, any M1 Carbine is better than no M1 Carbine.

After going to Wanenmacher's Tulsa Arms Show in early April, with the express goal of coming home with an M1 Carbine, and then leaving empty handed, I was pretty jaded. I knew what I could buy a "Quality Hardware" or "IBM" (my top 2 choices) from Classic for, so that was my price point. EVERYTHING I considered in Tulsa was at least double, most, good all matching non-Inland Carbines started around $2K and the sky was the limit.

When I came home empty handed, Jewels snagged the QH Carbine from Classic. I think I'll keep her. 😍

The Carbine I got from Classic was absolutely FILTHY, rusty, most of the barrel finish is gone, and the stock was beat to hell. I get that they are surplus, and it's luck of the draw, ordering sight unseen online, but had I seen this gun, in the condition I received it, for the price they're asking, I would have rolled my eyes, scoffed and moved on. Jewels either didn't read or understand the option for having them hand select the best of 10 option, so I got the first one they grabbed. Side note: I got a police trade-in S&W 5906 from them a few years ago, paid for hand selection, and still felt like I got ripped off, so I'm not so sure hand selection is worth it.

What I got was a Quality Hardware receiver, with probably its original Rock-Ola barrel, QH mostly used Rock-Ola barrels, but that's about it. Everything else is an arsenal, hodgepodge of parts, of other manufacturers and some post-war replacement parts.

A few examples based on this website:
Receiver: Quality Hardware
Barrel: Rock-Ola
Stock: Underwood
Trigger Housing: Inland
Bolt: Mystery (says "AT 3" the 3 is sideways like a fancy script W)
Hammer: Inland
Sear: Inland
Trigger: Standard Products
Operating Slide: Inland
Barrel Band: Post War Replacement
Mag Catch: Post War Replacement
Safety: Post War Replacement

1943 I believe.

I took the thing almost completely apart, didn't remove the front or rear sights, nor did I disassemble the bolt. Cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned some more. I soaked all the small parts in Evapo-Rust for 36+ hours, occasionally scrubbing with a nylon brush. I thoroughly scrubbed the stock with a toothbrush and various soaps, started with orange oil cleaner, but that did nothing, then went to Ajax liquid soap, made some headway, and eventually attacked it with Comet powder, yeah you read that right. It was FILTHY.

Gross, the recoil spring tube was solid brown with rust, I wish I had a before picture, it really cleaned up nice. The oil tube and its retainer in the stock were the same way, super rusty, but the Evapo-Rust worked great.

I got the stock reasonably clean, hot water from the tap helped the smaller dents quite a bit too. I had a thread in Chit Chat, to get some pointers on steaming dents, got some pointers and called names, par for course. I wound up using a steam spot cleaner on the stock, spent about 2 hours steaming out dents. Not perfect but sure helped.

The sight was stuck, couldn’t adjust elevation at all and windage was only adjustable to the right. A lot of degreaser and penetrating oil finally freed it up. The Carbine arrived with its sight no longer staked in place and has a lot of play in its dovetail. It’s not loose enough to remove by hand, but there’s ~3/16” of side-to-side play. These things were just stacked in piles, no telling how many other guns got dings and dents from my gun’s sight.

Here's some rust pitting, this is after cleaning.

Condition and price aside, I think these Carbines are being sold for $300-$500 more than they're worth, but what really ticked me off the most was this. :frown:

From Classic's own website. :shaking:

Here's how I got it:

Here it is after a few hours of cleaning, treating rust, steaming dents, rust protecting, a few coats of tung oil, and learning how to put the thing back together. I should probably make a better YouTube video for the trigger spring, I watched 3 or 4 of them before I got the orientation right. :homer::laughing:

All in all, I'm very happy, like I said it's an amazing gift, and I've wanted a Carbine to compliment my Garand for a long time. It cleaned up fairly well, I wish the barrel finish was better, and for sure wish I.O. hadn't stamped it, I wish it was more Quality Hardware than just the receiver... but, the bore cleaned up well, it's bright and shiny, sharp rifling grooves, after cleaning and lubing, it's got a real smooth action. I expect it will be a real sweetheart of plinker after I restake the rear sight, and IF I can ever find ammo.

Take it for what it is, this is only one example, from one anal retentive, somewhat snobby, wanna-be collector. Carbines are drying up, prices are soaring, but temper your expectations if you're buying one of these African imports, they're still overpriced.

Thanks for salvaging an important rifle. How does it shoot?

I wouldn't have paid over $300 for that junk!

I actually looked at their auctions a few weeks ago and as we all agreed in the shop, they were on crack thinking anyone would pay those prices for beat up M1s.

Not sold as advertised? I would have already had the money back on my card. Is Classic the same jackoffs on YouTube?

It sure has an import mark. I'm not going to make too big of a stink about it, it was a gift. Yes, they have a YouTube channel, not sure what porn platforms they're on though.

Haven't shot it yet. Ordered 250 rounds of ammo from LAX last night, it's LAX's own brand, not sure if they're manufacturing or rebranding someone else's ammo, never shot any of theirs before. I only have the one magazine too, need to fix that.

ulrasonic unit with some mild acid cleaner works great to remove some of that crap.

I've got the smaller HF ultrasonic, but it doesn't run long enough for most stuff. Two cycles of its max time limit with the heater on, and it trips the over temp warning light and safety. Usually it won't make it completely through 2 consecutive cycles. I get annoyed having to babysit it, and wait for it to cool, so it doesn't get used a lot.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know.

I would definitely be pissed about that import mark.

Nice job cleaning. In a couple of years the price will seem low.

To all the dudes talking about returning it...

If you're lucky enough to have a woman who buys you a rifle as a gift, you don't nitpick a damn thing about anything. Lee knows what's up. It's a surplus rifle with a cool story and it should be a fun shooter. When the wife sees you smile and enjoy a gift she got you the rewards are much greater than just a rifle.

I use the Chicom SS cleaners from ebay for brass and parts cleaning. I use it a lot and they usually last about 3 years, then I get another one.

Looks nice. I like the old used look personally. Yes import mark sucks, but nice gift.

but what really ticked me off the most was this. :frown:
what I read that site as is that the SERIAL is not remarked
like all the parts kit AKs or cheap mosins that don't get the serial from the parts, they just get a new consecutive serial engraved for importation

they still need to do an importer's mark since they came into the country after... 86? Maybe it was the '68 one but I dunno any more.
you can remove this importer's mark though, since it isn't the serial number

I agree, they were stating that the original serial number would be used and it wouldn't be ground/crossed out and re-numbered. This happens with some imports.

All imports must have a visible importer's mark, it's the nature of the laws in the US.

They dropped the price by $100. I’m sure they’ll fly out the door now. I did leave a comment about rough shape and the fact that it does indeed have an importers mark.

Did your review actually get posted? I spent about 20 minutes crafting a thorough review, uploaded photos, even uploaded that loose rear sight video to YouTube, as required by their review format. So far it's still not on the page for for the Quality Hardware listing. I wasn't mean, but was blunt, worst I said was that Classic is charging too much for what you get. I guess I don't really care, maybe I do or I wouldn't be telling random internet folks about it, but I kind of feel like they're censoring it.

That YouTube video got automagicically turned into a Short and already has about 500 views, look out Hickok45 I'm coming for you. :lmao:

I ordered 3 new 15 round magazines and 1 original "UQ" marked Quality Hardware 15 round magazine that cost as much as the other 3 combined, a reproduction sling, and some ammo.

Of course I need a bayonet, right? Period correct Carbine bayonets are silly expensive, a lot more expensive than the Garand bayonet for some reason. Apex has '50s Italian issued Carbine bayonets for a reasonable-ish price, not correct for my gun, but it's not like I have a collector grade museum piece here.

I wish I had bought a bunch of the Korean surplus .30 Carbine ammo that was everywhere about 3 years ago. I bought 250 rounds from LAX, never shot their stuff, but at the time they were the only place that had anything in stock for <$1/round, just barely after tax and shipping.

PXL_20220510_230601527.MP.jpg

I set up in-stock notifications for .30 Carbine at all the usual places, and even a few I've never shopped with. Literally the next day, after buying $$$ ammo from LAX, I get an email from Midway that they have Sellier & Bellot in stock for ~$0.85/round during their free shipping sale. They only allowed 2 boxes per household though, but I snagged 100 rounds from them too.

I'm going to try and make it out to the farm this weekend and see if this thing goes bang.

Any tips on fixing the rear sight? The folks on CMP and similar forums don't seem to have much luck with blue Loctite, most recommend shimming and/or re-staking. The stake marks on mine are already pretty ugly, I don't want to add more. I also don't own a sight pusher, at least not yet. I do have a few options for soft mallets and punches, and a 20 Ton press, I could get the thing off and back on if I get mean with it. I was thinking one of Loctite's retaining compounds would be better than thread locker, I've got some green sleeve retainer, but they have a few options for other sleeve/bearing retainer compounds and wicking compounds.

It got deleted so I commented again. I haven’t checked again. It’s probably gone.

Not sure what the sight/dovetail looks like from the side, but shimming it with some brass sheet could work. Though you'd have to press the sight out which would un-stake it and loosen it up more.

Or if you can shim it a bit as-is, and then deepen the stakes a bit with a punch, it could work as well. Staking it a little more won't make the marks much larger. I would try mechanical methods before chemical on a metal to metal situation like this. And with the amount of wobble there retaining compound won't fill the gaps.

It was tight at one time so it shouldn't be too hard to get it back to that state.

Everything I've seen from Ethiopia has been extremely rough. M1 carbine prices have gone too high in my opinion. They are a handy little rifle, but short on range and firepower.
You did a great job getting that one back to a usable condition.

I'd probably just restake the sight.
