Cummins 3rd Gen fuel system longevity tricks?

I bought a one owner higher mileage 3rd gen with 292K on it. It is the 2004.5. Lots of repairs by shops with paperwork, including the transmission with all the billet stuff, the transfercase and drivelines rebuilt etc. Runs really nice, drives good etc. I have a pretty good idea on what is what with research and advice from a member here. I know it is a risk with the miles.

So.....the seller also told me that he has not had any fuel related issues at all. A fuel filter at recommended intervals. He was not a mechanic and seemed to have no reasons to hide anything from me. Never had a tuner on it.

It has the in-tank pump. I have added the Howes anti-gel and am replacing the fuel filter next week.

What are some specific things I can do to help the fuel system (injectors) las as long as possible?

I have looked at the FASS filter system as well as the under hood Glacier Diesel underhood filter. I like the underhood system.

Any recommendations on the which system or other ideas? Maybe I just sit on 3K and wait for the injectors to die LOL.

Seriously though, if I can pick up a better filtration system that will help I am happy to do that.

What are your experiences or thoughts on which filter for this? Not after power, just want things to last.
 
On my 4th gen with the stock fuel pump. I think I spent $200-ish in ‘15, way cheaper than any pre-made kit at the time!
2 filter bases from Fleet Pride
Baldwin 20 micron water separator before a Donaldson 3 or 4 micron, both by the case online.
I ordered all of the needed fittings from McMaster and hose locally.
I made a bracket that used the 2 rear drivers seat bolts. The filters tuck up nicely above the factory skid plate.

Do some research and make sure you but the right bases!
 
Fleet guard has a a two-stage fuel filter with a 5 micron outer filter with a 3 micron inner filter
I change mine every 15k with over 200,000 mii
 
Factory or for an aftermarket filter stand?
Yeah, even their filters will spin onto a aftermarket set up. Not all of them are drop-in.

And I went back and reread the OP’s post, and I don’t see an aftermarket system mentioned.
 
My only concern is helping this system live as long as possible. I don't see myself adding HP or modding the truck beyond an exhaust maybe. They make multiple systems. A few of them just replace the factory filter housing etc. and install a cat spin-on filter in its place.

Because of ice and some unique driveway challenges I prefer to not have stuff underneath.
 
Baldwin ‎PF7977. I am going to install this which is supposedly the greatest filtration OEM filter I can get. Maybe I am over thinking this. Happy for advice. And I appreciate your help.
 
Mopar filter every 20k and send it, don't fuck with something that worked for 20 years and 300k.
There is some logic to that. I suppose whatever injection system wear has already happened LOL. I bought a 3 micron drop-in filter for the OEM filter canister. Just an FYI but the cheaper ones from the chain stores are 14 micron..... Screen door for particulate matter.

Says it’s only 7 micron, I thought it was 3 or 4. :homer: I guess not, I have 3 of them on the self in my garage. And I guess 1 under the back seat.
