Finally getting back to an axle build after a 1.5 month hiatus...

2nd pattern. First had no backlash.

Backlash dead nuts on at .008.

Thinking need to increase pinion depth. How much? Not a clue, first time doing a gear install. Seems like its close.

Sd60

That's way too shallow, I'd probably add 0.010" to pinion depth and check again.

If it helps I dont focus on backlash until pinion depth is set as long as it's close to spec. Might help save some time as you work through multiple shim changes

+.010 on pinion depth

That looks pretty good, I'd have no issues running that.

If it's for a crawler and you want to keep messing with it to get the best possible pattern for strength you could try getting it a little deeper like 2-3 thousandths and see what it looks like but you're really getting into splitting hairs now.

Just out of curiosity what's the cost side looks like?

Well, I thought it looked a little too pinion deep once I set backlash with the second pic.

Took out .004 pinion depth. Sitting here now.

Concentrating on drive side. Didnt bother checking coast side. Once I get an acceptable pattern, ill check coast.

Current backlash as it sits is .006, so its on the tighter side of spec. I think it looks acceptable, but I got untrained eyes.

I'd run those

So who will fess up to running very bad patterns?

The front 60 on my rig is so bad it's not even funny. Pinion got into the Detroit 10 years ago and still works. It's a front with hubs so...

What brand of gears? Yes, it does matter. Cheap gears will never get a perfect pattern.

More pinion depth still. Get that pattern right into the bottom of the ring gear with a tiny margin. Then adjust backlash to get it centered heel to toe.
They are cheap gears. Dana SVL.

Not sure I can build an inner bearing shim stack .002 deeper than what I got with what I got on hand.

Id honestly be happy with either of those last two patterns. I agree with johnny and would lean more towards a little deeper like the second pattern with the added 10 thou but you're the one with eyes on it.

If it was rear gear in a tow rig, I would like a deeper pattern. For a front gear in a 60, what you have is more than acceptable. It'll be fine.

When you're running your pattern check, put as much resistance on the ring as you can with the palm of your hand as you rotate the pinion. Give the gears a load so to speak.
If you do gears a lot. It’s worth the $5 bucks to buy a hickory hammer handle for a little ball peen from ACE. I find I can keep a more consistent pressure on the ring gear with one.

So I put back in .003 pinion depth. Adjust backlash to .008.

Kinda thinking its good, but open to opinions. Theres kinda a sharp cutoff at the root of the gear, is that just from shitty gears?

The guy I learned how to set up gears from would love that last pattern.

I personally with bring the pinion out/away .002 and see what that got me.

Nope, don't have a book. Using pattern guides offered by the innerwebnet and the collective retardation of irate. I'll put it on my shopping list, looks like something I'd want on a shelf.

The guide patterns I found on the inner web says sharp lines on the top or the bottom of the pattern is bad. To me it looks like there is forming a sharp line at the bottom of the pattern at the root of the tooth. Flying by the seat of my big boy pants here.

I used this book when I rebuilt the 60 rear in my 79. Smooth as can be up to around 100 which is as fast as I want to go in it. I use every pony under the hood and pull trailers with it too.
