Put sod down at my house over 4th of July weekend. I had 1 spot in the backyard that died off and has finally came back, not sure what happened I was watering plenty. I have some sod rolls that are growing crazy quick like twice as much as the roll laid down next to it, hopefully it all evens out.

Anyways the 5ft or so square that died off has came back but it is now full of crab grass also. I did my best to kill this shit off before laying the sod down but knew it would be SOB to keep it out but figured so was my best chance to try and smother it versus hydroseeding or regular seeding. I have some growing in areas between where the sod meets my lawn curbing also that I'd like to take care of as with some coming through the flower beds. Yard when I bought the house 7yrs ago or so was 100% crab grass, it died off due to a bitch 2 houses up shutting off my neighbors and I irrigation line as she felt like it. Thought I had it killed after it being starved for all those years but once I got my new underground sprinklers in and started watering to keep dust down the shit came right back strong as ever.

what's the best way to kill this shit without killing the $2k in sod with it? Scott's recommends their spot weed control or a round up for lawns but I wanted to see if there is something I can spray or spread on the whole yard to kill what's there and hopefully get ahead of what hasn't popped through yet. Saving some money vs buying their watered down homeowner stuff would be a plus also.

From what I understand you need to use preventer in the spring before it comes up to get rid of it. Once it comes up and or germinates its to late

I wish I would have at the time, it was sprayed multiple times with weed and grass killer by roundup. I'm afraid its gonna take over and kill the actual yard.

Dig it up and replace that area with new sod. Once it germinates I havent found a way to get rid of it.

My step dad was really into his lawn before drought killed it. Best I remember is steps. Prevent crab grass, kill weeds, grow and fertilize lawn, cut long to help shade and choke out weeds. He had s few years into a beautiful lawn

Bet anything it came with the sod. I have some stuff that works on Bermuda grass. You can spray it as long as it is under 90°. Which it maybe too late in the summer.
You may just want to spot spray with roundup and work on weed control late winter and early spring.

Prior planning prevents piss poor performance

the seed bed contained noxious seed!
you must have NOT sterilized said bed prior to laying the sod!
that or the sod weasels came over from the neighbors weed patch, dispersing presents...

Man, if you find a way to kill that shit let us know. CA is full of crab grass and it’s only dead until you water it then it’s back to life like a zombie.

What he said. It"s an annual. Pre emergent next spring. Easy. Pull by hand for now. Stop the new seeds. On yer knees boy !!

Err
pisspoor is one word?
Or "the 6p's" and Ima dummy?

Still
Turf is the most expensive thing in the res. Landscape as to annual costs...

I miss Methyle Bromide (sp).

My wife uses this stuff works really good. Just use it whenever it pops up.

Thanks guys.

I will keep pulling it and give that call in one stuff a try.

I do not believe there is a selective crabgrass killer that does not also- kill regular lawn grass. I would test those shown above first. $2K sod lawn. This isnt rocket science.

I have Centipede and St Augustine, Tenacity kills everything except the grass. Thru some chemistry black magic, it strips the chlorophyll and turns the weeds turn pure white until they die. Including Crabgrass

Bought some round up spot treatment shit this morning and sent the wife out into the yard with it this morning. Will keep an eye on it and probably do another treatment Tuesday or so. If it doesn't take I will buy some of that tenacity.

Centipede an St Augistine . . . not really regular lawn grass. :flipoff2: Roundup, glyphosate, should torch anything with chlorophyll in it, excluding the new GMO shit. I dont recall the OP stating what type of grass or what climate he is in.

Eastern Washington, considered a desert climate. Been over 100* all week. Sod Is Kentucky bluegrass blend.

I put sod down in a yard at the end of June....there were a whole bunch of tall shoots that grew about 5 times as fast as the rest of it. After a couple weeks, I went and hand pulled it all. Went back yesterday and got about 20 or 30 or so that missed the first time. Now it appears to be pretty clean, but time will tell. It has to come in the sod...that's the only possibility. The dirt where I laid the sod had not been watered in over a year and there was nothing growing in it at all.
