Last night I was high bidder on a reserve auction for a donated vehicle. $2800 reserve, I was $750. After a little back and forth after the live auction I ended up at $1050 and they are $2650. This is my first time bidding on Copart.

Here’s my question, the vehicle link now says “awaiting seller response”. This ended at 9pm last night. Does that mean this item is still active and they might still approve that bid? Or if they haven’t responded again by now is it over? Wouldn’t the link be dead like the other auctions if it was closed?

I left a message with the Copart branch it’s at this morning and haven’t heard back yet. The reason I’m wondering is there’s another one I’m interested in if this one is a no go and don’t want to end up with two.

likely means the post-auction negotiation window is still open ( likely 24hrs) however if there's no active dialogue between you, then it's most likely over. Between me and my buddies, there's been a few times they asked for more money, we said no and they sold it to us. never dealt with donated vehicles, always bought from insurance co.

if you buy from a seller other than an insurance company at copart you will get fucked. that is all.
fixed

i've scored more good deals than bad ones from the salvage auctions. it's certainly a gamble once bidding elevates above part-out value though...

What's the vehicle? Is their reserve stupid for the condition or age? Donated vehicles are from charities, so their only goal is to maximize revenue, as opposed to insurance companies who just want the damn thing gone.

It’s not out of line if it doesn’t have any costly issues. ‘09 Ranger 2wd with about 150k miles. Midwest rust. 4-banger and auto.

It’s 3 1/2 hours away so I wasn’t able to check it out. I’d have to take a day off work to go pick it up if I win, so all things considered I think half of the reserve isn’t out of line. Especially when everything else on the auction bill was selling well.

They probably think "pickup = $$$". And don't realize that their vehicle is worth less than they think.

But that's not how the reserve works from a seller's standpoint...

I’m going to chalk this one up as a loss at this point. If it was at the lot an hour away I probably would have been more aggressive on it.

Tomorrow a ‘11 Impala with salvage title from hail is coming up that I’ll probably take a swing at. One like it sold for $1100 at the same time I was bidding on the ranger. It’s a no reserve auction from an insurance company.

$2800 reserve for a two wheel ranger? That’s crazy talk.
About 4-5 years ago I went to a farm auction specifically for a 2wd Ranger ext cab to buy for our son. It was in decent shape but not awesome. I ran it up to $2k and backed out. Someone we know paid $5500 for it and used it as a farm truck and sent it to scrap in about a year.

This one I was bidding on was a $1500 truck at best.

how are you bidding on copart? Pay the $100/year to be a member?

There's a yard close to my place, and I am thinking about a new ride.

I paid the $100 and then just have to check to make sure I’m able to bid on the specific vehicle since I don’t have a dealers license.

never heard of Copart

quick search of the local place.

 been in there once, never again

They pissed me off before I could even give them my money that I wanted to give them

They lowered the reserve to $2650. The bidding ended at $1150. Another no sale. I wonder how many times they'll run it.

So now I've noticed a pattern with Copart and this reserve auction in particular. The truck keeps showing back up on my watch list every time they relist it. The "seller", which I think is a copart bot, will counter offer at $50 below the reserve after the auction ends if the reserve is not met. If you raise $50, they drop another $50, on and on. Then, if you hold your offer without raising, they stop countering.

When this truck gets listed again, the new reserve is what they stopped at with countering. At first they'd start the bidding at zero, so I played the game for two more auctions to keep getting them to drop the reserve, stopping at a price point I was confident they wouldn't accept. Then they must have caught what I was doing, so when it came up last night they started the bidding at where I left off last time. So, I upped it $50 to win the bid, still well under reserve, and the counter offer game started again. I got them to drop another $150. Keep in mind, this is a cheap vehicle, the original reserve was $2800. Now the reserve is down to $2350. I stopped bidding at $1400.

I'm guessing they'll start it next time at $1400. I'm not going to bid on it and doubt anyone else will. I'll just let it cycle a few times and see if they drop the starting price again. If they do, then I'll start the process over again to see if I can get the reserve down to $1500 eventually.

I have a 1999 ranger two wheel drive, 2.5L, long bed. About zero options and has a massive dent in the bed side. Starts, runs and drives. Make me an offer.

Stick?

I got it for free, used it to teach my daughters to drive stick. Treated it to a new fuel pump and air filter last month.

Rock auto specials. These trucks are cheap to fix.
