Let me start by saying this build may be a bit small for this group. I just thought that I might get some great insight from those in this group since I would assume everyone to be mechanically inclined.

Back Story:

I have a buddy that lives less than a mile from me and I go over there and drink beer fairly often. I decided that rather than walk like some loser, I would build a cooler that I can drive to his house. It seemed like the obvious and only thing to do. I'm sure everyone has seen some version of these before. I know I can go buy one that is ready to go but that's no fun. I prefer to build something from the frame up. Make it my own thing and have some fun with it.

Here's the problem. I don't know what I am doing. While I do consider myself handy and know my way around my wood working tools, this is unlike anything I have ever done. I have never built a vehicle of any kind or have never welded anything in my life. I've watched a ton of youtube videos on welding so I feel like I got that down now, though. kidding...

Here's my plan(??):

I'm off to buy a welding machine today. I plan on practicing my welds while I decide on specific parts for the build and wait for them to arrive.

I was thinking I would purchase a gokart kit and adapt/modify it for a coolerkart build. I know I want an electric motor. Not because of global warming or anything, I just know that if I drive a cooler full of beers over to a friend's house, I am likely not driving that cooler home at a decent hour and figured an electric engine would be more neighbor friendly than a gas engine at 2-3 in the morning. Second thing I would like to add... a hitch to pull a small cart. I figure, I gotta have a place to put my girlfriend, right? I don't know if I'll be asking too much out of an electric motor or not, but Elon Musk figured out how to make the world's ugliest truck 100% electric. I think I can make a small kart to lug me an my girlfriend with a cooler of beer around. Maybe that's too much. I don't know. I will find out I suppose.

Anyway, that's my super loose plan. I thought I could start a tread here as place to add questions that will certainly come up along the way. This seems like a mechanically inclined group that could prove super useful for me. I'll try to post progress pictures along the way. Please, please, please chime in with insight or suggestions. Thanks for letting me mooch off of all your experience and knowledge.

Cheers.

I already have an obstacle...

So gokart kits seem like an easy way to get all the required parts for this thing. One problem. A gokart is going to be significantly wider than the cooler needs to be. I don't need the axels to be quite as long as the smallest gokart kit, I've found so far.. Anyone know of a good place to order custom axels? I wonder if making my own would be a realistic option?

Awesome, and good luck! No matter how this ends up, learning to stick metal to other metal is a very valuable skill. If you're anything like me, it will involve lots of booger welds. Don't let it bother you--if it holds up, it's good enough.

I like the electric idea. I can't help but think that some of those pissed off electric RC motors would be enough if you gave it enough gearing.

Wait a F'n minute ..... who is this 'other friend' you're drinking with till 2am?!?! :flipoff2:

I get the electric for the sound, but I'd bet there are plenty of go cart mufflers to keep it quiet. Certainly wont be any louder than Harley or Ricer going down the street after the bars close and there are plenty of those.

I'd lean toward gas ... because I don't know shit about picking out motors, battery planning, etc. Do you have any idea how many batteries it's gonna take to get to our house?

Also .... if you don't want to listen to the backseat driver you could bypass the muffler and drown her out. That'll teach her  (don't tell her I said that)

Yes you can get custom shafts, we can head to Shapiros Metal Supply one afternoon ..... it's bad ass.

I know a shop you can use .... and a beer fridge to temporary put beer in .... and a guy to help you drink it.

If you go with gas, and tow a trailer with the gf on it, she'll be sucking fumes the whole trip. It gets old quick. Go with electric, it'll run 2 miles easy. I'd build the cart with the running gear and everything on it, like a single seat golf cart, then the trailer with the bottom of the seat being the cooler. The differential on an electric golf cart is offset, look at replacing the long side with another short side to narrow it, and keep factory parts.

Or, just buy an old golf cart and put the cooler where the golf bags go.

And yes, depending on the night the officer is having, you can get a DUI on a golf cart.

Something else popped into my head that is likely THE most important detail of the whole build. What should I name this thing? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

this plus a 36v LiIon battery from amazon would probally be your best bet. I used that but the brushless version for my scooter build. I took a Razor 300 scooter and put a bigger motor on it, its pretty damn fun.

Buy an UTV or golf cart put a cooler in the back

Not much to add to this, but I think it's a great reason to learn to Weld. Invaluable skill to have for a lifetime.

And, I've been on a motorized cooler in my youth.. it never seemed fast enough, but glad it wasn't faster, considering we'd be hammered on whatever was in the cooler at the time..

Good memories and times, build one!

This motor.
AmpFlow A40-300 Motor

Connected to a right angle hollow shaft gear reducer so you can run a 1" axle through it.

Oh fuck yeah. I'm in the midst of building one myself.

Go kart kits are the way to go for parts, but they're $$$. I found it cheaper to buy a go kart locally, then modify to suit. I intend to narrow my chassis, mount the cooler, then build the electrics to go around it.

Instead of going the dedicated lipo setup, I'm going to use a pair of 60v dewalt batteries, 60v motor controller and 60v motor. Seems to be the easiest way to use what I've already got (batteries) and a pair of 9ah ones in parallel should run it for a long while.

I had intended to use a predator engine, but on the first test of the go kart at campgrounds, the campground hosts don't like how loud/fast it is. Electric will be more stealth.

ever seen those videos of people putting M18 or dewalt 20v batteries on powerwheels? thats what comes to mind when i think about this.

Those are bad ass, I almost feel like the wheelie bar is a must after drinking

This will solve so many problems in my life.. Watching.

my .02
Anything powered is a possibility of dui.
anything 2 wheeled is a road rash invitation.
think golf cart motor\battery, cut axle down?
The 3 above rock.
I love the quiet hondas, maybe with a huge silencer plumbed like a sidepipe or stack... oh and think ground clearance ( more than the +- 3" those pit carts have)...

Jbenson12 came by for some man sodas and brought all the cart parts he’s been gathering. Did a rough mock-up….

He bought a harbor freight 110 welder and once we got it dialed in …. I was kind of impressed. The last 110 I used was a craftsman like 10 years ago it was total crap. It will be perfect for this project.

The igloo cooler was the original cooler I planned to use. I think it cost maybe $20. But after trying to figure out how to fasten the cooler to the cart, I decided to upgrade to the RTIC because it has two tie down slots on the sides. Overall... it's just a waaaay better cooler anyway. so what if it cost $200. lol!

THAT'S so you don't get winded heading to the party dragging a chest!
Cool stuff in the day.
Op gets modern tech...

Some progress made today. I need to get all the parts in so we can crank this thing out. I'm so thirsty... Need beer now... Also... There was an unexpected expense added to the project... So long basketball shorts we had a good run. Sparks from grinding(not at the club) did them in.
