We all need more counter space, Sometimes when I'm not using the stove top but I'm in need of more space (like BBQn outside) I took a piece of plywood, cut it down and it fits over the stovetop burners, Because I made it in a hurry and didn't have time to clean it up fancy I just wrapped it in foil. I'm now thinking of making it fancy, Maybe using something other then plywood. Or wipe it down with mineral oil and call it good.

Grab a large bamboo cutting board and toss that down. Little spendy if you don't shop around...

But they are rectangular so the shape is good. Since they're not lightweight, you can mount blocking on the edges to elevate it above the burners.

Something to consider, without fancying something up yourself.

You can buy stainless ones like these... certainly available from other places in other sizes or you could have your local sheet metal shop bend you up some scrap.
