Ok so I have been trying to buy one of my wifes grandpas cars for a year now and he is ready to sell it. Its a 01 forester with 47k on the clock. Its a Sacramento garaged car so in really good shape.

He is “gifting” the car to my wife so I dont know if cali has any funny laws regarding title transfer. We are washington peeps and I have never bought a car from out of state.

It is going to be my work commuter for the winter and I want to help keep it as tust free as possible. Salt and magnesium chloride arr what they spray with. I know fluid film used to be a good product but I dont know whats good or new these days.

Any info is helpful.

+1 on fluid film and woolwax. I started with fluid film, then went to woolwax for the thicker spray. I kept using up my fluid film for the insides of things thinking it would spray easier. In reality, I have no problem getting woolwax to spray just fine out of my application gun so that's all I use now.

Do an extremely thorough job the first time then you can do yearly touch-ups as necessary.

Another fluid film vote, have used it up here for ages and it works great...

I don't know about rust prevention, but in California a relative can gift a vehicle with no use tax transfer fees. The registration transfer fees still apply, should be under $20.

Form is California DMV Reg256, Statement of Facts. You can download it off dmv.ca.gov

Those foresters weak point is the rear strut towers.

Basically inside the rear wheel well is where all the issues start. The rocker panel rust starts there and the quarter panel rust starts there. Use rubberized undercoat on the uncoated wall in the strut tower first to seal up the seams, then soak everything else with fluid film.

I've had wool wax on my Super Duty for 10 years since I got it from TX. It's not a winter daily, but I've had it out in the winter a handful of times and it's still mint underneath. I got wool wax on my 98 Expedition when I got it from AZ 5 years ago. It is a winter daily driver, but I make an effort to keep it clean. It still looks mint underneath.

WoolWax is a yellow skull sponsor of this site.

I guess I should specify, I have Texaco Wool Grease... I assume they're the same? but maybe they're not... I'll vouch for the Texaco product.

What do you use to spray it? Any tips or tricks? I just moved to new england and need to figure out how to protect my truck

We get 55 gallon barrels of Fluid Film at t work to coat our wire ropes that go into the water, so that is what I use. My step son has a side hustle spraying cars and he uses NH oil, I think that is a superior product.

I have had mine done professionally. There's one place in Michigan that does it, or at least there used to be one. Could be more now. It's expensive initially, but they pull your door cards, tail lights, inner fenders etc to really get in there when they first do it. They'll touch your car up for free with an appointment once a year if you want, although it rarely needs any touch up. My old man had his Expedition done like 5 years ago, and I think it was $650 at that time. I think I spent $600 on mine a year prior. My Duty was ~$500 back in 2014.

What do you guys think about the coating they're putting on the newer chevys from the factory. Almost like a black waxy type shit. I know working underneath them is a messy job, everytning you touch comes off on your skin.

My 24 HD looks good now, but not sure I can even attempt to put on woolwax or fluidfilm as it is now with all the factory coating on.
