Clamp on spring perches?

Finally got my 88 tin top home yesterday and was able to look at it firsthand rather than just pictures. The pics of the spring over (only thing it looks like has been done to it aside from a not even half ass rhino line job) had been bothering me, it looked like the welds were cracked. I was wrong, they aren't cracked - there are no welds. The spring over perches are basically sitting there supported in a couple points - sitting on top of the axle tube, and then front and rear there are these extensions sitting on the lower (original) spring perches. Only thing holding all this on is the u bolts.

Any body ever seen or heard of this? I tweaked my back a little earlier, or I'd throw up some pics. Soon as I can get under there I will.

looks like a low dollar SOA/SUA swap kit... They use the stock perch to keep the new perched indexed.

not ideal...
 
Doesn't really matter what you do, they'll probably fail either way. The weld on one's break the axle housing. The clamp on one's just seem to move around.
