What's new

CJ5 wild stretch and full build (Big Booty Judy)

For sure! Every step forward It seems I have to change a little here or there.
My axles are pretty narrow, so I had to move the shocks all the way out, and notch the frame :homer:

But after doing that it all fits a 14" travel 2.5. Don't forget about the tire tipping in and touching that way. Lots going on!

Sway bars came in tonight. Really impressed with the packaging from kartek. Glued inside pvc piping, wrapped in paper.

1 1/4" solid monsters  she ought to stay really flat in the high speed stuff til disconnected. :smokin:
20221026_203857.jpg
going to haveto dog leg the front arms to work around stuff and put them in double shear so i can use hardened quick pins.
20221026_204113.jpg
this really shows why i welded the pass through tubes for the front and rear crossmembers. Its all part of the plan.
20221026_204119.jpg

Sway bar in at full lock. Will have to bend the inner portion to clear steering and suspension components on both sides.
20221028_204155.jpg
front coils relocated
20221028_204201.jpg
had to push them outboard as I was going to have to hack the frame up pretty awful to get them to clear during articulation.
20221028_204209.jpg
made all my sandwich plates for the rear coil tie ins.
20221028_213021.jpg
fit em up and welded in the coil tabs.
20221028_215338.jpg
and located the rear coils at full stuff for tie in to the cage
20221028_220343.jpg
shameless supplier plug
20221028_220349.jpg
It now has coils on all 4 corners! Will have to cut the pockets bigger as i didn't account for the reservoir hoses.

Beginnings of the rear coilover mounts going in.

all plates in and tacked.

Used 2x3x .120 box tube to reinforce the cage tie in plates. Will still plate over the top of the hole and weldin.both mounts in and stiched in place. Sitting on its own weight (axle on frame, with suspension) for the first time.

I has the updates! Had time all day today thanks to the holiday this weekend to get some work done. Got to install my rear air bumps and the rear sway bar. Which basically finishes out the rear suspension. Picked up a set of gears for my 14 bolt a couple weeks ago (4.88 ratio) so I now have everything to finish the rear build.

air bumps welded to frame tie in.

sway bar at not nearly ful extension. (13-14" of travel here, I want at least 20 in the rear).

So that's my next big issue. Going to have to extend the sway bar links over center of the axle and notch the truss for the links to pass through so I have enough sway bar for at least 20" of travel in the rear. But looking good so far, and it's getting really close to ready to pull the body back off for finish welding of the frame and suspension components. I will have time Saturday to goof around with the front and hopefully get those bumps and sway bar in.

I imagine my rear will look similar. Also, love the rear seat rack for the L-Track, another "To Do" on my list.

It's not a lot to stuff in the rear, but amazing how quickly you still run out of space. That L track is super neat stuff. I love using it. Surprised it's not more popular.

Today marked a huge milestone on Judy! She's officially a roller today. All the bumpstops, links and coilovers are in, front cycles up and down, nothing hits, and I'm ready to start tackling steering. A few more things and the chassis will be ready for final weld out. Every day a step closer.

snug, but 0lenty of clearance on the modified sway bar links.

Not much to add this week, but my springs finally showed up. So a few more stitch welds to make everything stay where they be and she'll be on her own legs soon.

No other progress to report since we're playing golf cart hill attack this week and drinking beer while camping in the desert

Well, I haven't had a chance to touch this thing since before Thanksgiving. I saw my opportunity today and I took it. Yanked the front end off and started finish welding out the frame tie ins, the cage tie ins and bracing so I can put my coilovers together with springs and get it on its own weight. I'll have help tomorrow so I plan on pulling the cage and body, and then I can start welding everything out. Will be a lot closer in the next few weeks.

I don’t understand how Irate works sometimes. I was Sub’d to this and haven’t got an update for a long time. Now it showed. I went back a whole page to get caught up. At least, you did a ton of work since I last looked. Lots of good shit.

Carry on.

I can see surface rust. I didn't think rust was allowed in California.:flipoff2:

I'm in the same spot, just pulled the body to finish weld everything. It's a good feeling.

Good to see you getting back on this. How long did it take to bend those sway bar link arms?

Csutton- maybe 45 minutes for both with a Torch and a heavy vise? I have to unbend them a hair actually before I make the links. I'll truss the axle before I sling it back under there.

WaterH- same for me. I've lost a lot of notifications on threads i like to follow and I don't understand why. But thanks. More to come shortly.

It's my dang hands. Every place I touch ends up rusty. Must have weird pH in my sweat. :flipoff2:

Pulled the cage this morning since I had a couple hours before doing family stuff this afternoon. Wasn't too bad with the little handler forklift.

Cage up and out, then on the floor. I'm going to TIG weld it out, because I like things to take longer and I'm retarded.
20221224_094705.jpg
body hasn't looked like this in a year and a half. Body is loose and ready to pull. Maybe tomorrow before dinner, maybe Monday. Then it'll go back together till it's running, then back apart for paint.

TIG will make it nice. You got to be good with a MIG to make it look the same. (I’m not) But I will say, by the time you get done with that, you will be good.

Well...... body is off and the chassis is open. Going to get to welding soon, nice to be able to access everything. Will make plating tie-ins and tabs a snap.

Gratuitous chassis shot. All the lower cage mounts swivel easily out of the way. I will definitely be stepping the 3/8 holes in all the plates to 7/16. They were way too tight trying to pull the bolts back out of them.

Looks like a bomb went off in my shop and puked my jeep everywhere. But will make finish welding so much easier.

Oh hell ya, finish welding will actually be fun. None of that squatting in the middle of the Jeep trying to weld overhead that's not quite overhead.

Well done.:smokin:
Yup. I'm tired of rolling around on the ground. Weird to see it completely stripped again though. Dammit I was here about a year and a half or two years ago.

I had a GF like that, had to ban her from the shop. Any bare metal she touched would have an orange hand print the next day.
