Chrysler 9.25 question

Backstory: I purchased a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 with a Chrysler 9.25 rear end. Previous owner used the truck in the snow. Rear axle pinion seal was leaking when I bought it. I took it to my mechanic who put in a new seal but said there was some rust damage on the lip where the seal sits. He did his best to clean it off and installed a new seal with some silicone. Now the pinion seal is leaking again, but only when I drive it. The outer edge of the seal is dry, and I can’t see ta leak, but the u-joint has oil on it so I’m guessing it’s leaking around the pinion and onto the u-joint where it’s being flung around the back of the truck.

Dumb question to follow….. is there anyway to seal this up or do I just keep filling it up until I can put in a new axle (which will actually be a new front and rear so I can regear and put in lockers)?

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated.

I like the crush-sleeve eliminator so you can fuck around all you want with sealing the pinion.

Put one in an 8.25 years ago and keeps everything easier imho.

Edit: just topping it up might be easier. :homer:

I dont fuck with rusted parts, so I'd just refill as needed.

Buy a 3rd gen disc axle to replace it. Better yet a SRT10 D60

Did you check to see if the vent is plugged up? Could be building pressure.

Is the oil coming from the seal, or is it seeping through the pinion/yoke splines? I know my t-case will leak oil through the splines if I don't put a little RTV on them.

You sure it's not leaking up the spline?

Pretty common to put a dab of RTV under the nut on yokes and flanges to prevent that.

I put it on the washer on the spline side.

Good info. Thank you for the responses. I’ll check the breather and throw some silicone on the nut/washer this weekend and see how she goes.

I checked both of your recommendations. The breather was completely clogged so I cleaned that out. When I went to see if the oil was coming out on the pinion splines, I was able to unscrew the pinion nut by hand. Somehow it had backed itself out, so I siliconed as recommended and then got a new pinion nut and torqued it to spec.

Drove it those morning and didn’t see any new leaks or oil being thrown around. Thank you for your help.
