Chip Shortage Forces Ford to Build Trucks Without Computers

YES!

Old-school trucks making a comeback :grinpimp:

Wait - (reads article) -

The company says the pickups will be held at factories for "a number of weeks," then shipped to dealers once computers are available and quality checks are done.

Dammit! . . . this >< close :frown:

Damn you, was just about to buy a bunch of Holley and Edelbrock stock for the run on carb purchases

Please alert me when the little triangle windows built into the door start making a come back. :homer:

Fun fact. I was bitching about no rear defrost on the 1975 Cherokee I have to my dad this winter. He told me to just run the heat/defrost and pop open the cigarette windows. Sure as shit, as you go down the road, it defrosts the rear glass pretty quickly when it gets up to temp.

No shit, I still have two square body chevys that have "wing windows".

One of the best parts of my AC system I call it 260 air.

Building two of my fleet that are 0 computerised parts onboard.

DDing a 72 with ignition points and style points currently. Only circuit board it has is in the AM/FM/CD/aux input deck. Hit me EMP! It didn't even have door handles installed when I got it but they were in a trash can full of parts that was included.

I for one favor a mechanical fuel pump fed carburetor if I'm going back to basics. My K-20 rotted it's 2nd fuel tank, and I happily keep it usable with a 5 gallon can in the bed running a suction line extension off the original fuel inlet. That isn't possible with an internal electric pump nor as practical with a fuel system that has to run return lines.

Both of my toyotas could be had with bat wings and if equipped with a/c had a vent under the steering column.

I took the batwing windows out of all my toyota trucks that came with them. They're fine in a full size but it makes the already small toyota truck windows terrible.

One of my trucks is still carbureted with manual everything but brakes, I'm pretty sure I tossed the points distributor I have for it so it's not emp ready.

I said to someone that my 2010 Tahoe would be the newest vehicle I’ll own for probably the rest of my life. Still holding true and I have no plans of buying anything newer.

EFI is great, no doubt. But, simple is mechanical fuel pumps and carbs. When they’re running in tip top shape they’re great. If I had to guess, even when this country goes full-retard-GREEN, classics and antiques will fall into a loop hole.

I'd like an 85 or so f350...
whichever year it was that got the d60 front and the 6.9 instead of the d50 ttb or the 7.3

I miss smoking windows...

Anybody play good date/bad date back in the day?
You let the lady in the passenger seat and as you walk around to the driver side she either pops the manual door lock for you or leaves you fucking with your keys outside. Best indicator how the night was gonna roll on:usa:

got the 6.9 till 87, 87 was best year with some 7.3 parts incorporated. still kicking myself for selling two dana 60 front 87 6.9 t-19 trucks

I can not find any media source indicating that Tesla has slowed production due to any chip shortage. Environmental issues and fires yes, chips no.

Pretty sure Tesla doesn't use anywhere near the amount of chips any one of the big 3 does.

And that speaks volumes about the tech and engineering philosophy of the respective companies. Also, maybe :flipoff2: the battery car is way simpler in some ways than trying to regulate and run an ICE and transmission.

depends how integrated their BCM is
with how engineers seem to be trending toward a separate can bus module for each seat, window regulator, door lock actuator, lamp housing, etc I could see it if they used a single BCM and sensible wrist thick bundles of cabling

otherwise, no, ford's woes is just a failure of 'just in time manufacturing' where it is seen as better policy to overnight parts from suppliers than it is to hold any amount of backlog in parts stocking

Kinda of a drift but is it practical to EMP proof a current tech vehicle ? A little foil ??

I wished they would put the ball/cootchy cooler vent back under the steering column.

late 90's cars with AC pumped straight to your nuts was peak car technology.

and hands free high beam dimmers....and cable operated hvac controls...

you can still get all the automatic light things.
but probably not on a car with cable actuated HVAC controls.

electronics are generally pretty hardened against voltage spikes
only ones I can think of in recent memory that are fairly fragile are hyun/kia gauge clusters, they die when you drop a ratchet across the battery terminals
didn't believe it until it somehow happened to two different guys, first time I figured they tossed the battery in backwards or something

other than that you can generally weld on them without issues
