What's new

Chevy 1500 2.7?

wet belt driven oil pump, trans needs pulled to change it. 80k interval iirc

My friend in fl has one for 2 years now. He drives like a idiot and hasn’t killed it yet. Wanted me to find him a chip for more power. Ecm is still locked down, Heaviest thing he hauls is groceries.

Electric water pump, electric thermostat variable this variable that. I’d stay the fuck away.

I don’t know. I think all brands are gonna cut corners where they can. Nephew has an f150 that have axle nuts that back off. The service manager admitted they don’t have a fix after the third trip to the dealer.😜

And my personal favorite, the camshaft(s) physically shift back and forth to use different lobes.

We have one. It does good as a people mover. It drives 80 miles up the mountain every morning and 80 miles back down every night. 27mpg average.

So far it's had nothing but oil changes at 40k.

To make a 1500 with a v8 reliable the first thing I'd do is delete the AFM. However, they almost always seem to make at least 100k, so if you're going to dump it before then I don't think it matters.

We have had 1 truck go down because of the lack of a transmission dipstick. Dude knew it was leaking but figured "I'll just keep driving it because it's moving". New 6l90e at 120k because the cooler lines were leaking. :homer:
Nothing but tires and oil in the rest of the fleet. We only have the 1 1500 for the apprentices though. All the journeyman get 3500s which don't have the AFM.

FFF UUUU that

hell, i get why 2BB is asking. I'm not in the market, but that feels dirt cheap for a brand new truck

Yep, wife can use it to cart kids and bikes around town, it could tow our 3500lb travel trailer 3x a year, and I could use it to chase down the occasional 3500lb kubota while in the comfort of a new truck.

Hijack:
My gf is set on buying a new Tahoe. 5.3 10 speed z71.
How much am I going to regret letting her do that?

Watch out for lifters. The 21s-22s seemed especially prone to eating them early in life. I have a 2019 1500 with the 5.3. It likes to burn oil. About 2-3 qts every 4000 miles seems to be the current rate at a little over 86k. You will also get typical GM wiring nonsense.

OP, the 2.7s also seem to be hit or miss on eating lifters. The stock UCAs in these trucks also seem to hate life. Especially if you put on a leveling or lift kit.

Tack welds appropriately placed?
Beats it coming undone and taking out nuns and childrens...

2BB,

For something like that wouldn't a Nissan Frontier or similar suffice?

Bonus is that it fits anywhere due to a smaller size.

They definitely hired the bottom of the class, engineering student for that brilliant idea. Or it could be drugs, lots and lots of drugs

You ever towed with one? I sure as hell wouldn't want to.

The last time I drove a Titan it was scary with a few hundred pounds in the bed making it do a wheelie.

You sound like one of those guys who needs a dually for a small boat because he dropped out of 3rd grade and setting the bunks where they gotta be to make the truck happy without beating the shit out of the hull is too much math for him.

There is no way a modern pickup can't comfortably tow its own weight. And 2bb is the kind of person who knows that so you're not fooling him.

Have you driven one? The one I had to deal with had springs made of butter. It was not fun hauling or towing anything above city speeds.

Lots of modern trucks suck at truck things. My buddy called me the other day asking where to buy a WD hitch. His got stolen and he said "it's ok, the F-150 is rated to tow more than this!"
It sure did pull it just fine. The first time he got hit with a crosswind and the truck decided to change lanes he shit his pants and parked it.

Driving rental cars with 4 cylinder turbos, iv noticed alot of "spark knock or detonation".

Being rentals, they get the cheapest fuel, and I really think they need premium to run correctly.

Something to consider with these newer turbo engines.

Damn, those Chevy prices aren't awful. Are new vehicle sales in the shitter?

I poked around on that site, even the V8 fancy trucks are heavily discounted.

I've been eyeballing the Maverick hybrid for a commuter vehicle. The thought of getting 40 mpg is what is appealing to me.

I've never really been a fan of running premium for the feel goods, however my new 4cyl turbo bronco runs noticeably better on it.

That is probably the cheapest i have seen in a long time. Especially if you qualify for a few more of the rebates and have a trade to get that extra 2750(assuming they dont screw you on trade value).

If they were closer I would probably swing in and get one for my wife. Basically a cheap commuter, maybe not quite commuter MPG though, but close enough

+1 every time a Chevy guy rides in my F-150 they remark on how much better the truck rides, it's quieter and the seats are way more comfortable. :flipoff2:
I recently rented an Excursion and a Suburban for the Hartford-Boston drive to/from the airport. so 50ish miles, so short term data

I liked the Ford better for ride quality. Interior was a toss up. Pretty sure they were the equivalents of each other trim wise

He was talking about a Frontier and you mentioned a Titam:confused:

When talking about a Frontier, yes I’ve driven one. We have a newish 3rd gen Frontier that we’ve already got 41k on it. I’ve towed with it , a dual axle 18’ trailer at about 5k# and didn’t notice abnormal sagging or swaying etc in the multiple times I’ve towed with it.

Almost doing a wheelie with a few hundred pounds in the bed is pure hyperbole for any truck.

My '05 F250 5.4 3valve gets fresh oil/filter every 3k like clockwork.

Everything I read about cam phaser issues, including FordTechMakuloco whose opinion counts mentions being fastidious about oil changes takes care of premature issues.
I keep thinking about ditching my 01' V10 and man I read about all these new truck problems, I don't need the extra horseytorques, gadgets, and bullshit of these new rigs. And the sky high purchase price. My 250 does what I need and knocking wood still does it well.

Secondly, I try not too take anyone to seriously and go all fanboi, but Ford Tech Makuloco is such a great resource. Dude knows his shit.

Ditto.
The fact that he shares so much knowledge for free, and it is all video documented benefits diy crowd.
No clickbait or ad crap, just a shrewed and a very competent mechanic.

Hang onto your 2 valve. New vehicles make good rentals:laughing:

I've been looking at new trucks again lately and our local dealers don't have prices anywhere near what this place lists. How is their pricing so much lower than other Chevrolet dealers?

2024 1500 Trailboss 4x4 Z71 with 5.3 for under $40K. Link

Hard to believe you can go buy at new crew cab full size for the $26K (bare bones 2x4 with the 2.7l).

Local Chevy places are sitting on a bunch of 1500s. HDs are still harder to come by.

trash is selling a lot a cheaper now.

I’ve been driving a 24 1500 2wd with the 5.3. Power feels no different vs my 2019 4wd with the 8 speed. A tune and a reverse level would make it more fun to drive.
