The mother of a friend passed away in NY. She left a 2006 VW Passat that was in her name. Title cannot be found. What would be the least painful way for her son to get legal ownership? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Th executor of the estate needs to bring a death cert and his executorship papers to the dmv.

In AZ I heard there is a 12mo window where a car owned by a dead person is fair game, ie, show up with a death certificate and they issue a title without much due diligence, after the 12mo it becomes a bigger deal where ownership needs to be proven, or goes down the path of bonded title and certified letters and waiting periods or wills and such.

It sounded odd, but in a way out kinda makes sense, clear out the dead persons effects quickly, if it's not done in a year, then somebody else might have a claim to it...
