What's new

Capatillars

shouldn't you be able to just spray the trunk and lower branches and then they can't worm their way up to eat the top?
I do that as well but I’m not positive that’s how they get up there.

Back in the 90's they were all over Shelter Island. So bad that it was a constant rain of caterpillar shit. Every tree was bare and the locals tried everything they could think of other then mass spraying. Then they just died off and everything was fine. Sucked while it was going on.

Most of the canopy is gone. The remaining stuff is a type of birch and some maples that they are working on now. I'll have to get a pic of the other side of the property where it's totally bare.

I think they are entering the pupa stage now. Seeing fewer but large ones.

I've seen some tent caterpillars around here . No tents yet!
Around here they like some black cherry trees.

They are the worst that I've ever seen in central PA. Like previously mentioned, it literally sounds like its drizzling rain all the time, pieces of leafs, and shit everywhere.

Ive read that its the worst in decades, possibly due to the previous few years of spring being drier than normal.

Nothing wrong with the spray they use to wipe them out ('BT'), its naturally occuring and very effective..

Invaded by billions of gypsey moth caterpillars. Probably half of the trees are just about bare. They hit the oaks real hard so far.

Tumblepillers of the dead blowing around.
Start figuring out what meals you like to make of them. Soon enough, it's the only protein you'll be able to find..
