Canopy alternative?

Was curious what others are using for canopy at camp. Typical 10x10 canopy doesn't last long before either top or frame gets destroyed. Thinking of DIY A frame setup with 10' black pipe for legs with a bolt welded to on 1 end capture tarp grommets. 1 FPT -FPT coupler on each leg to make transport easier.

questions:
Is 1/2" black pipe strong enough, if not, what dia?
What did I fail to plan?

We buy a lot of them for our swim meets. We've found the more you pay the better they are. Straight legged models last longer. We used to buy the cheapies at the end of the summer and they'd last 1 maybe 2 years, the expensive ones are going on 5 years now. My personal 12x12 straight leg one is 6 years old.

Is this what you're talking about that lasts 5yrs?

I have two of those Costco Coleman 12×12 since 2017 with no issues. Had 3 but a storm killed one that wasn't staked properly a few years back.
 
We had a 10x10 Walmart special that was like $40 on sale. Can't complain for that price, but it did break eventually. The nice thing about those is you don't get as pissed when a random gust of wind tosses and wads it up.

We recently got a 12x12 with an extra eve around the outside from bi-mart for like $100 on sale, it's 10x's nicer than the Walmart one and feels like a $250-350 pop up.


As far as the black pipe idea, I don't know if I like it. If you're trying to go that route, I'd go like 1" or 1 1/4" PVC, way lighter and you should be about to just use regular fittings but with no glue where you want it to come apart.
 
I've got two 10'x10' and a 10'x15' easy ups that are twenty years old and in great shape, who are you letting handle them that they get damaged?:homer::homer:

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought PVC got brittle in the cold and the white stuff is not UV stable. I had planned to leave this out on the trailer deck.
 
Wonder if one of those carport types that use thin wall tubing would be better suited for you

I was leaning towards something more durable, metal, in case I were to step on it in the dark setting up.

1/2" BP is 0.85lbs/ft.
Paired up with a 12lb 10x20 Core tarp the whole thing should be under 30lbs

Same... I looked into these but the setup time, even with multiple ppl, was just too long and they weigh 90lbs. Trying to do something that I can do solo and fairly quickly for when I arrive and it's already raining.

No kidding.

One I had it lastest not even 12hrs from time it arrived to time a breeze bent it up. About ripped my face off too.
I got pissed that it attacked me so ran it over with the 977L, cause **** you you stupid thing. :laughing:

Use plasric electrical conduit seems to hold to the sun pretty good
 
As soon as the 10x10 ezup is set up it is staked down, always. If its windy it gets guy lines as well. The telescoping tarp poles they sell for such purposes are pretty nice too. I bought a nylon 15×15 tarp that has grommets already in it that fold up pretty compact too, half the size or less of a comparable sized tarp. But for quick easy setup, the broverlander style awning is where its at. The legs on that need to be staked down too though
