What's new

Canadian Ice Shack Build (the sequel).

Poly iso is good. Looses r value faster in cold, but starts higher than other foam also.
Yeah, I read all about that. I was gonna use polystyrene, but it's more difficult to find in town. They only had the crumbly pressed white balls stuff or the pink/blue expensive stuff.

6 sheets of 4x8x2" of this stuff cost me nearly $600 CDN.

Poly is higher r than the pink/blue anyway. White stuff is crap.

So that's like 3 usd? :lmao:

shoulda looked around on the kijiji or whatever
there's usually someone around selling used stuff from flat roof tearoffs, like talking $100 for a 6' stack of sheets

white stuff doesn't take on water, extruded stuff does just as bad as iso

I only found those red silicone ones for high temp (400-500 F). Lots of varying opinions about them and how long they last.

You make a good point though, now that I've committed to using the smaller pipe, and have a flat piece I should check them out again.
They’re rated -100 to 500F. I’ve had the same one for a Looong time. It’s worth another look in my opinion, & that’s worth.. well, not much.

Didn't get a lot done this days off (nice weather, went kayaking).

Poor boy aluminum brake. Capping the ends of the insulation in the roof so I'll have a nice line to bump against with the j-trim.

Window flashing.

Watched a youtube video showing the details on tying in the side pieces to the bottom pieces. I opted for the special flashing for the top (instead of just more j-trim).

It looks odd because there's no typar on the outside. I'm intentionally leaving that out so it's not airtight. Helps prevent summertime mold, and helps keep oxygen levels up in winter when using vent free propane heat.

Dug out the old shack-attack trailer.

Haven't had wood on it for about 5 years. Put just enough boards to get the job done. When I built it, I was stupid and made a 7 segment piano hinge with 1 inch pipe and 1 inch solid round bar. Sumbitch likes to rust solid, so we spent a few hours this morning changing grease zerks and freeing everything up. I should have made a hinge with flat plates and a tab.

Got all the siding on.

Went with 44 inch wide panels, which worked out perfectly because three panels was a side and two panels was an end with very little waste.

Took two fucking days to fight those sheets on. Because the j trim on the top, corners on the sides, j trim around the windows and drip edge on the window tops every single piece had to be fought every inch of the way onto the damn thing. I am happy that I've got zero horizontal seams, but what a fight.

Closeup of how the tilt mechanism works. Double tongue with boat winch mounted on upper tongue. Upright struts welded on lower tongue with pulley at top.

Holes drilled every inch for safety pin.

Dual receivers on front of deck to accommodate 1.25 and 2 inch winches.

Wheeled it around the corner and out the shop with a forklift on one end and a trolley jack on the other.

Finally got around to the chimney and stove.

Bent the 12x12 piece of 304 and punched an egg shaped hole with plasma.

I don't use the big bessey often, but when I do. :smokin:

Glued and screwed a wood box. Really like that I can reach in through the door to fill this one.

Looks real nice when square with the wall, but angled is easier to load, and offers more clearance for the counter top that will go to the left.

Built the lower bed today.

5/8 plywood on whatever structure I could find since everything is closed for thanksgiving.

Big comfy Costco mattress 39 inch.

I put the mattress on a plywood on my forklift forks and adjusted the height to find the same comfort as sitting in a dining room chair. Turns out 9 inch plywood height was just right.

Storage tubs fit perfect.

Played the first game of crib with the boy by the fire.

Drafts great/no smoke in the shack.

I do get some buffeting when the fire is young. The door is loose in tracks and rattles back and forth with the pulses. Not sure what the most elegant way to address that is.

Tighter weatherstrip and an intake vent/shooting port in the door?
It's the woodstove door/draft that's rattling. It'll do it with the windows closed or open.

It's just a 3/16 plate in tiny angle iron tracks that you slide to open.

Since it's loose in it's tracks it's free to tip back and forth. If I make the tracks tighter it might bind and be harder to slide. It's the first thing I'm going to try though, and I only have to make the top slide tighter, the bottom shouldn't move because gravity.

got any steel strapping laying around?
put a bend to it along the length so it is bubbled up springy (like that old sheet bronze weatherstripping) and tack it on the right side of the door frame

Weld on a heavy handle that will tip the door out a little harder
