Im trying to help a lady out with an old horse walker. The manufacturer is long gone, and I cannot find anything about the Dayton Motor/Variable speed drive thats on it.
It has a Dayton 5K994 Motor/Variable speed drive on it, the drive is toast on it. I might be able to put a belt on it and limp it along, but it really needs a whole new drive. I cannot find any info on the stupid thing let alone parts for it.
At the very least I need a belt for it, the belt is totally shredded and broke, it is about 15/16" wide, and ~20.375" long. It has the number 5440 on it, I ordered one but that pulls up some other belt thats not even close to the dimensions.

Amazing how often old PBB threads pop up in searches. 10 year old post, but might be worth seeing if he still has it. I know I've listed stuff that didn't sell and it's still sitting on a shelf in my shop.

Looks like it's a a speed control similar to old drill presses - cranking the handle changes the diameter of the drive pulley? I'd think there's something similar out there that could take its place. Worst case - a little 230v 3 phase motor, gear box and a VFD to control the motor speed. Could be done for $2-300 if you find a good deal on the motor and gearbox.

only half a hp
I'd toss treadmill parts at it
they're a nicely unitized DC drive and motor, usually some sort of rating like 3/4hp, but "treadmill duty" so I wouldn't expect an actual 3/4 out of it

Dayton is the Grainger brand motor. https://www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-Drive-5K994?searchQuery=5k994&searchBar=true

As far as the belt goes, if I remember correctly, the 2nd and 3rd # refer to the length of the belt, so the one you have may be 44".

Grainger was absolutely no help which was a little suprising.
I ended up getting connected with someone nearby that has an identical horse walker, I took their cover off and their belt had the marking of 1632V210, which I was able to order.
I hope the drive doesnt explode until after I leave the property, its in horrible shape.

Hope luck is on your side.

IMO, horse people are like sailboat people - they want the $30 fix for the $200 problem, then if their shit breaks while you're there, they assume it's "your" $1000 problem.

I am with a crazy horsy ex-barrel racing GF. Her horses are 18 years old plus; they don't need a hot walker! A little TLC and some smart walking is all they need. Some crazy horse peeps can over work an old horse. IMHO: Hot walkers are for young horses that need cooling off or taking the spunk out of them. BTW: GF can analyze how the horse is doing by riding it or watching it walk. She sees and or feels how that horse is walking. I have problems knowing which hoof is hitting the ground. YMMV.....

Horse women are fucking bat shit crazy! RUN!

You take original electric motor to a electrical motor rebuilder. Get an estimate and call up horse lady with the price. If she really needs a horse walker, because I used to walk my horses myself, then past the phone to the counter guy and let her give him her CC#. Done deal. Charge for the uninstall and replacement, make sure she gets a guarantee. :smokin:

Motor guy already looked at it, Motor part is fine. Variable speed side not so fine.
