CAL4WHEEL SUPPORTS MOSQUITO WILDFIRE RESILIENCE PROJECT

Cal4Wheel submitted comments for Scoping for the Mosquito Wildfire Resilience Project in Eldorado National Forest. The comment letter cited support for fuel reduction and vegetation management as defined by the project, with a reminder that the agency must comply with Congressional direction and Forest Service operational guidelines through proper management of the forest. The letter additionally called attention to OHV and outdoor recreation as positive drivers for the project’s success, the need for equitable access to motorized recreation in Eldorado National Forest for members of the public with disabilities, and social and economic impacts. Cal4Wheel advocated for:
- Additional acreage beyond the scope of 105,860 that is currently slated for fuel reduction and landscape restoration
- Analysis and designation of un-inventoried, non-system, and user-created roads and trails to ensure maintenance of vital infrastructure for wildfire prevention, and access for wildfire suppression
- Permanent retention of all roads that are created for the purpose of the project, that no roads will be decommissioned
- A detailed long-term maintenance plan to be implemented following completion of the MWRP
Additionally, Cal4Wheel offered the ongoing support of club membership as volunteers to support the success of both immediate forest restoration and post-project maintenance needs.
