I'll be running it on a new MacBook pro.

For personal use so I'm limited on what I'm willing to spend.

I need something. PTC has made it impossible for me to run Creo at home.

Are you looking for something for a business or just for personal stuff?

The experimental aircraft association membership comes with free access to solidworks. Membership is 40 a year

Personally I run a personal license of solidworks at home and work has Creo plus solidworks. One of these days I need to learn Creo again but fuck I hate it.

RE Fusion 360
Just to be more precise, a feature-limited version is free for 1 year for personal use. Single user license for the full version is currently $495/year.

Solidworks crack. How to's are on youtube...

That's dumb. The software has crack detection built-in and DS (the company that develops Solidworks) generates millions in revenue each year from tracking down unauthorized use.

(psst) Don't use it to make $ and they don't really care...

Think I paid $800 for 2 or 3 years of fusion.
Well with it imo for the cam side anyway. Every bit as good as MC at a small fraction of the price.
I use it for cad as well and it does most things fairly well.

I believe our AutoCAD LT sub is $400/year. You just don't get 3D on some other features in the full version, but we don't need it.

Actually, they do care. I know because I work for the company. That said, the chances of single users getting an invoice are much smaller than a business. Either way, its still THEFT.

Its a shame Solidworks did away with the personal edition for 300. I know this year I wont be purchasing the maintenance renew since its cheaper to drop it for 3 years then buy again during discounts.

Dont forget about the student versions of software if you happen to be taking classes. Usually $100 for the full suite from Solidworks and Creo.

I'm not enrolled in any classes here, but I'm looking at taking some online engineering based classes now and had this in mind.

I paid $560 for Bobcad-cam "on sale" recently.

That's for a perpetual license.

I learned on Bobcad and love it, still have v23 or something very early with my cnc plasma table. Haven't used v33 much as it's on my laptop and I'm waiting on a new desktop....it is different from the earlier version.

2 years later is fusion 360 still the recommended free software? I have a 3d printer and a little bench top cnc and I'd like to start designing parts

Yes...Fusion 360 is still the #1 recommended free real CAD out there. I use it for my 3d printer along with Cura for slicing.

Onshape is a real CAD program that's web based (no need for a monster PC), an actually functional mobile app, and very cool sharing ability and part/assembly structure.

It is free, but all parts built on the free version are in public domain.

They have great customer support, tutorials, and well thought out. As a CAD rat for the last 15 years, learning Onshape was a breath of fresh air. I think it will gain significant marketshare in the next 5 years.

Still using free fusion360 here. They changed something and I had to login and go reactivate it. It wasn't prominently labeled on the website, but it still exists.

Still using Fusion 360, was going to switch to SOLIDWORKS for makers but there was one or two things I wanted that it didn't offer.

I've got Fusion 360 and have used it a good bit, but I bought access to Shapr3d which is great for 99% of what I'm using it for and it is awesome on the ipad...

Here's a screen shot of parts of a rotary ditcher I'm planning on building "when I have time".

Hopefully they've improved over the past 12-13 years (I would think they'd have to, to still be in business) but good Lord did that used to be one flaming pile of garbage software.

I had formal training in Autocad and went to work for a place that had just bought BobCAD. It was horrible, clunky, unintuitive, and their customer support was laughable.

I had a "Russian" version of Solidworks and showed the boss how much I could do with it, so he let me build a new workstation and we got Solidworks.

I did use BobCAM for the plasma table, but learned how to trick it, into nesting things the way I wanted, it was not efficient at using material.

It used to be as simple as having a .edu email address to get student/instructor versions of Autodesk stuff, but the last two times I've renewed Fusion 360 and Revit I've had to email a copy of my ID to prove I'm a University employee.

I’m using Onshape. It’s a million times easier than Sketchup for me, and I’ve used it for 3d printing. Works very well, requires no install, doesn’t take a big pc, and you have access to everyone else’s models.
