Buying Bridgeport Mill - what to check?

That's a great fucking deal. FWIW, I paid $1500 (after auction fees) for a series 1, round ram bridgeport. In hindsight, I think I overpaid.

I thought it was a pretty soild deal. I don't think I stole it, but I don't think I overpaid either. It seems like these pop up on craigslist in this condition for 3500-7000 depending on condition. There is so much more threre that I want. Surface grinders, die filers, bench grinders, saws, presses, hand tools. I am lucky I only went with 3500 cash.

Like I said, you live in the south, prices are stupid there. Bridgeports come and go on CL for $1500 all the time and you can have your pick for $2k (what the local machinery flippers list them at). Older vises commonly go for $50-$100 and are readily available at $200. Tooling is all over the place because 90% of it is owned by old men with one foot in the grave and their mental faculties are all over the place.

He did good for a "save us the trouble of dealing with the public" type deal but didn't steal it. If he scored all that off CL for that price he'd have done a little better but still not the type of deal you call out sick for.

I mean, if you're down to ship, I'd buy it to hold small parts on my fab table for finishing.

Great deal. Having all of that tooling to start off with will really help. Now you need to buy a lathe to use the lathe tooling on.
There is an immaculate Logan lathe there I would love to have, but I don't have the cash right now. Does anyone want to buy the lathe, and I will store it for you, free of charge? hahahaha

Or send me the lathe tooling to store until you buy a late.

That’s a good buy for what knee mills are going for around here the last several years. I picked my 2 Hp variable speed Bridgeport mill in similar condition as OPs for $1,200 with a Kurt vice but no tooling. I haven’t seen any listed for that amount since I bought mine.

I picked up my 1950’s Sebastian 13” lathe for $750. No lathes around here for that amount since I bought mine five years ago unless they’re antique or wore out and in parts
