Building orientation vs prevailing winds and snow

In my defense, I didnt build it and I didnt know any better. This was a building my dad had erected several years back. I cant ask him why he didn't have it anchored better, hes passed. This time I am having mobile home anchors installed.
That's what they use to install those buildings on around here. If they go on a slab, they'll bolt them down.

I have another carport you can see in the background of the pics that is situated the same way 150 ft from the building that I lost. That one didn't get bothered.

It was a fuck you from God, I'm convinced.

I was mystified nobody else mentioned the other carport in the background of the wreckage…. How is that carport anchored?

I think this was a freak occurrence and you’re over analyzing it. Install the new shed/ carport in whatever orientation you want and anchor it to the footings at the 4 corners or at least spiral/ screw type mobile home ground anchors, and call it good.

The same way...or lack thereof. I plan on getting better anchors installed soon.

Ya I think you're right. Idk why my dad oriented the building the way he did, but I'm gonna do it different, with the door facing east. The wind and storms never come from the east, they are blocked by the Continental divide. Hopefully I'm not wrong.

I like big doors aligned with prevailing winds.

I'm on the East side of the Divide and my work is in a big open space and from what I've read in this thread the wind is pretty much the same here.
It mostly blows from the southwest with occasional winds and monster gusts from any direction. I'm in a construction trailer with no skirting that is strapped down to Mafia blocks. I joke that one day I'll come in to no roof. There are days the wind rips the door out of your hand if you're not ready for it as the door opens outward towards the North. I call it Wyoming Lite. Only brings up Logging chain windsocks 60* most of the time.

Well, I got my new building finally. I had it built with the opening facing pretty much due east. The wind never comes from there. As soon as I paid the bill and the builders left, the fucking wind come straight out of the east at about 40mph and started lifting my new shed out of the ground, despite the screw in anchors. :mad3:

So today I anchored the East wall into the ground with 7" X 8' treaters, 3' deep in concrete. Bolted the shed to those posts. Then I'm hanging 2x 12' metal gates and standing 3/4 OSB upright off of the gates to make doors, to block the wind. Also ordered many more anchors to secure this shed and the other one I have.

More to come.

Do you still have the steel siding from the building that blew down. Make the doors out of that.

Full size. Sliding barn doors. One for each half of the opening.

I saved I think 5 sheets of the metal from the old building. Everything else was unusable. I may get sliding doors in the future. The doors Im building now will at least get me through this winter.

A properly anchored building is fine in any direction. My biggest through on direction is ice buildup in the winter. South facing doors is the way to go.

This.

People would probably be amazed at the amount of 1/2”-3/4” anchors holding their bottom plates to the foundation in their houses. Along with the tie-downs on certain stud packs that have about 30 nails and a 3/4”x8" anchor keeping them from moving.
