What's new

Build, The General Lee, Tons, 40s, stretch, leaves

Well, last wrenching day before the maiden voyage this coming weekend. Took care of a few final things.

Installed my new fancy 6 foot long LED buggy whip. This one is RGb with multiple colors, patterns, and flash modes.

Then since I haven’t heard anything from Tyler at Accutune I think it is sadly safe to assume I will not be seeing my rear Fox Remote reservoir shocks before the weekend. So I went ahead and slapped on a pair of $40 Skyjacker Hydro shocks on the rear so I can still go wheel the thing. I’ll swap them out when my Fox shocks finally arrive. Hopefully before the Veterans Day weekend run.

That said this beast is finally “finished” and ready to hit the trails. I am sure I will find something this weekend that needs to be tweaked or adjusted, but for all intents and purposes, the build is pretty much finally finished. So stay tuned and I will have a first wheel report and lots of pictures to share after this weekend.

Alright. The moment you have all been waiting for, we went wheeling!!!

I am overall massively pleased with how the General works. It rides SO nice! I can finally keep up with my buddy in his TJ flying down the washes without knocking my fillings out. Even my lovely wife was amazed how much better it rides now. The back still felt a bit rough, but I don’t have my good shocks in the back yet. It climbed anything I pointed it at with ease and felt very stable.

Few kinks to work out.

1. I need to bleed the brakes again and maybe play with the rear prop valve. They barely hold in low range (3.8:1). I found it better to shift the trans to neutral when I had to stop completely for more than a minute or so.

2. I can NOT get the front output to shift into high range. I was surprised at just how fast I had to be coasting in neutral to shift the main case at all, it needs a good bit of speed. But no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get the front to shift into high range. So I was in 3.8:1 or 10.4:1 all weekend. Going to try and adjust the cable again.

3. The cheap Chinese 200 amp circuit breaker I installed between the alternator and the battery would just randomly trip from the heat in the engine bay. Had to bypass it. Will replace it with a quality brand unit or something else entirely.

Those were the only things that cropped up that I need to address. So on to the pictures!

Loaded up and ready to head to the desert.

Then I noticed a couple of things this morning when I loaded it onto the trailer for the drive home.

Looks like I bent the drivers side front leaf spring. It’s unusual and I have never seen a spring bend like this. Usually they bend the other way.

And apparently I forgot to torque down the bolts holding the rear shafts in. They were finger tight by the time I loaded it up and I had gear oil all over the wheels. Oops.

Hopefully I will have more pictures to share later tonight or tomorrow when my buddies get home and post up the ones they took this weekend. This is mostly from my phone and my wife’s.

Few more from some of my friends.

And we capped off Saturday night by watching the unrated version of the Dukes of Hazzard movie.

I also must mention this thing is quite the head turner. Gassing up the RV I had several people swing by to ogle at it and compliment me on it. Many of the other rigs we passed this weekend had similar reactions. People were going out of their way to get a closer look at it.

So today I spent some time giving the General a good once over after the shakedown run.

Started by taking care of the Dana 70 axle shaft flange bolts. Pulled em out, put some red locative on them and cranked them down to spec. Cleaned all the gear oil and dust off the wheels. I also discovered a couple of loose lug nuts on the rear tires so I also tightened those back up.

After that I went ahead and gave everything else a good once over and inspection. Here are some better shots of the bent drivers side front leaf spring. I have already ordered a replacement spring for this. Hoping it was just a bad spring. I don’t see any visible signs of anything that I might have caused this. Doesn’t look like the shackle inverted as I don’t see any marks in the paint in that area.

I have also already ordered a Buss brand circuit breaker to replace the Chinese one that kept tripping on me for no apparent reason.

Past that everything else looks great. Only some minor cosmetic paint damage in a few spots. Drivers side front beadlock ring and both sides of the roll cage that got rubbed against the walls in a slot canyon we ran thru on the night run. Also broke one bungee ball that holds the top on.

All in all I’d call that a successful first outing. We have another desert weekend coming up in a couple of weeks so I’m gonna get the minor issues taken care of, hopefully figure out my front high shifting issue and get her ready to go again. Next time out I’ll be a bit rougher on her now I have a feel for it.

Well we just got back from the second wheeling weekend. Still have not gotten my rear shocks in, the replacement front leaf spring didn’t come in time either so I wheeled all weekend on the bent spring.

This weekend I got a bit more aggressive with the General and really started putting it thru it’s paces. Last trip I took it somewhat easy as I was still learning it’s new handling characteristic and dimensions and so on.

The longer wheelbase really showed thru on several ledge type obstacles. There were a few my buddy struggled with in his CJ7 on 37s that I pretty much walked right up. But on the flip side, it is not as maneuverable in tight turns as it used to be. Having to a do a bit of multi point turns in a few spots now.

Anyway, on to some pics! Another one of my buddies got some really good shots this weekend.

For the evening run we decided to head on over to the 4x4 training center and play around. The General conquered every obstacle I put it thru.

Had to hit the RtI ramp. I probably could have gone all the way to the top but the kids were in the back.

This obstacle beat the CJ. With his wheelbase he just couldn’t bump over it. The a general went right over.

Then I ran the General thru the little sluice

And as the light was fading I had to be a little bit of a jerk and take it thru the tank trap. This particular little course my buddy in the CJ hates because he broke his Dana 60 in it a few years back and refuses to go thru it again. So of course I had to conquer it without breaking. You can see in the background I had some spectators for this one.

It has to be a great feeling to finally get to beat on it after all the hard work. Well done and it looks great.

It really is. And I really haven’t come across too much that needs to be changed either. I am very happy with how it turned out and with how well it works.

Well it’s been a hot minute since I’ve updated this thread.

since my last update we made a bit of a move from SoCal to Downeast Maine. Since we got our first real snow yesterday and snow wheeling season is upon us, I’m now thinking about some kind of actual top for the General.

Now, I of course stretched the tub longer than LJ length. LJ stretch would have been 15 7/8” or so. I went ahead and did an 18” stretch. So I’m about 3” or so longer than an LJ. I also know to do an LJ top I have to go back and change a few other things as the TJ is a fair bit different than the YJ tub. That said I know people have made the LJ top work, but I doubt I could get it to stretch an additional 3”s.

a 4 door top won’t work for obvious reasons. I’ve only got 2 doors. So then I got to thinking about a Scrambler top

52A9DBAD-B41D-4AB3-AB2A-076AA5CAAAC7.jpeg

Now a Scrambler top would be much easier since the CJ and YJ tubs and windshields were practically identical. I’m also already running a CJ tailgate, so all of that would work together nicely. Only issue here, is again, my dimensions are off. From what I found online the CJ8 tub is about 6”s longer than my tub. So I’m debating if I could make that work so it fits tightly. Looking at the pic of the Bestop scrambler top, I think I maybe could as it slants back quite a bit at the bottom. The questions is how to cleanly modify those back corners to bring the bottom in 6”s to the rear corners. Anyone got any ideas?

You could check with some boat shops…. Might be surprised at affordability!!! They’re doing custom stuff all the time!!!!
Maybe just have them do the modifications to the scrambler top????

Were you able to register and plate the jeep in Maine?

Especially this time of year. Shouldn't be a big deal for them to make one up, might even be able to get them to make an "authentic" top in orange with a rebel flag on top.

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered the Bestop scrambler top with a new set of soft doors from Quadratec. Discovered today my hard half doors aren’t going to fit. Seats are too close to the tub sides and the roll cage down tube interferes as well. Soft doors should go on no problem though. Sucks because I wanted to do upper door sliders. All well. Quadratec is showing it on back order currently with an estimated ship date towards the end of the month. Should have my shop heater hooked up by the time it gets here so I’ll be able to work on it in a nice warm garage.

More importantly how will you attach a Confederate flag to the scrambler top? Maybe one on a flagpole in your hitch receiver? :smokin:

Well my Scrambler top and doors came in. Finally got a chance to play with it today.

I was pleased to find the Scrambler belt rail is actually two pieces. A long front piece, and a short rear piece. I suspect this is because the long front piece is actually the standard belt rail for the YJ and CJ7, and they just add the two short ones for scrambler tops. Anyway, pulled the Jeep onto the garage with the heat going. So nice having a big heated garage to work in!
4CC72983-6FC1-41EC-A1E0-86B01E5C754E.jpeg

then I went and started installing all the hardware. As my suspicions were correct, I needed to cut the rear belt rails down exactly 6”s.

Belt rails modified and fit perfect, all the hardware in I went to go out the top on. Contrary to my measurements, it is not 6”s too long. Due to the mini rear halo on the cage, it is actually too SHORT! It won’t clear the mini rear halo. Really annoying because it’s actually a pretty much perfect fit for the rest of it. Windows are perfect. So I think I am going to try to find a local boat cover shop or something to see if they can actually add material to the top at the back so it will clear the mini halo and allow me to attach the rear corners and install the back window.
