Since high school I wanted to catch an alligator gar on a rod and reel. I've caught a hand full of long nosed gar and spotted gar on fishing poles, but we dont have gator gar on the river or lake I live on. We tried this trip last year with not much luck, the guide was awesome and gave us a free trip to make up for it and we smoked them this time! We landed 8 of them, 5 pushing close to 100 lbs, one that was 131 lbs (caught by me) and 2 that were small enough to keep and eat (which we did). This was hands down the funnest fishing trip I have ever done!

Vid of my monster fish.... Not sure it will work, never linked a fb video before-

That looks like fun. we have gar here in MO but I have never seen one that big. Wasn't it Toymoto that loved to fish for gar with a bow?

I’m confused...you keep the small ones? Not the big ones?

:smokin: thats fawkin cool

crazy you were fighting it for awhile like right next to the boat it looked like?

also watch your fangers around those for sure!!

On the Trinity river in TX, you are not allowed to harvest any alligator gar over 48" and your not allowed to bow fish for them with out a permit. I was told the reason is because it only takes a few years to get to 48", and the ones like I caught can be as old as 50-60 years and older.

My buddies kept the 2 small ones we caught and they grilled the meat like a steak. We were told by several people down there that you dont fry it like fish, you either fry it like chicken or grill it like steak. They actually called me while I was coaching a practice last night and said it was delicious. We were told you dont rinse the meat, and the fresher the better.

Common with a lot of fish. The meat quality and texture deteriorates on the big ones. If you’re worried about mercury, the larger fish will have much higher levels as well.
