BMW Choice

F30/31/32 with N55 engine is pretty much bulletproof. The E90 is cool is you can find a clean one that hasn't been ghetto hacked.

I have worked on my Father-in-law's WELL maintained (truly) BMW enough to know I never would:
1. Buy a BMW
2. Buy a USED BMW
3. Tell anyone that I have intimate experience working on a BMW

E90 is cheaper to maintain and fix when (not if) it breaks. N52 engine is what you want, or n51(more emissions shit). The turbo engines are garbage. F chassis is dumb unless you have ista, which I'm sure you don't. Along with a deep understanding of German engineering.

N63 V8s are a great engine. Smooth running, efficient, powerful. But you will spend a kings ransom trying to keep it that way. The early ones had a plethora of problems that were mostly resolved through the 'N63 customer care package'. I made so much goddamn money doing those ccp's, it also included a timing chain check which I ended up doing a fair number of timing chain replacements which is a +/- 40 hour (yes, a full week) repair. I still have them come through and they blow smoke out the pipe from failing valve stem seals....

Stick with an N55.

IF you go n55, you're an idiot of you don't get the aftermarket front main seal saver plate thing. I've done so many front seals due to the belts shredding. Oh, and fix the oil leaks.

The real fun is when they run it until pieces of belt go through the seal and plug the oil pump pickup. Then they get to pay 10 hours labor to drop the pan and clean it so they can see if their motor will blow up now or at a later date.

Thanks for the actual feedback.

I'll stick with the 335. Seems like the manual sedans are the hardest to find though.

Have an '09 E90 335xi, six speed, 4 wheel drive. It's been good, a few issues that are known problems (valve cover gasket, PCV, intake valve oil buildup) but fairly easy fixes. I never thought I'd own a BMW but this one fell in my lap and is a great DD.

I actually really like it, been driving it a few years now and will break 150k miles this year. Good power (stock plus Cobb tune, ~400 hp), smooth, quiet, and so far pretty reliable.

bimmergeeks.net for software and cable.

standard D1S bulb.
I bought a pair of name brand bulbs for $100. the factory ones did go for 12 years. no different than anything HID.
assuming it's not poverty spec with halogens.
Get a wagon. :flipoff2:
this. always wagon. but you will pay a hefty wagon tax.

I haven't fucked with anything F series.
E series isn't that bad. not any worse than anything else of the vintage. Everything got 22 computer modules these days. at least n55 won't need turbos.

charge pipe and MHD/XHP and send it.

oh, and don't forget about the n55 tendency to suddenly eat it's rod bearings.

especially if you change the OFHG and don't prime it apparently.

no personal experience, but apparently it's a thing.
don't use shit oil.

I've already got bimmergeeks cable and protocol, as well as ista for my past BMW.

I put a deposit down on a 2007 335i sedan this morning.

Black/black, sport package, manual transmission.

sure it's not N54 then?
n54 had more than it's fair share of teething issues.
Check it for rough idle or smoke on cold start, cause injectors. They also like to eat HPFP. and wastegate rattle/turbos.

hit me up when you want to toss the ancient CCC idrive in the trash and upgrade to CIC with a combox so you can get bluetooth audio. It's repinning some connectors and some laptop things.

The V8 and V10 engines in the M cars definitely had rod bearing issues in my experience. Inline 6 not so much, but I'm sure failures are out there from modding and beating on them.

where's Dan with the "335d" comment? He's had me looking a couple times. Saw one recently for $6k, but 200,000 miles

S54 6cyl in the e46 too, i did mine at ~120k. but that's the gen prior to OP's discussion. And e46 M3 prices have about doubled since I sold mine :homer:

but everyone is going to beat on them.

lots of videos/threads showing up of n55s knocking lately.
BMW changed service procedures to include no fuel oil priming during service.
something's up.

I'm not saying it's widespread, but something to be aware of.

but being an 07, it's n54 anyway.

I have a lowly n52 cause wagon.
not that I regret it. It's pretty fucking reliable.

Only thing I can add about a BMW is that I love my M57 diesel X5. Its been deleted and tuned which has it sitting at 380hp/600tq and I can still average over 500 miles per tank mixed driving.

My next purchase will be a X5d. Hopefully I can find a decent one around.

I love my 335d wife loves her 535d. Only one left to own is the X5d. We got probably close to 60-70k miles on them and no issues other than standard maintenance shit.
