Blew the HG on my 455

gee thanks
Just being realistic my friend. It can go fast but it won't be cheap and it will use alot of gas....unless you cheat some.

I built a '77 cutlass back in the late 80's. It was a nice car and was quick for being a heavy car. I think the best mileage I got was around 12 to 13. Put your foot in it and it dropped to single digits. But what a ride. :grinpimp:

If you're looking for fast with acceptable gas mileage, you're in the wrong car. if staying in the 70s and GM, you need to look at a nova, monza....vega.

im not looking for 40mpg, but 0-60 in 7 seconds should yield more than 7mpg :flipoff2:

A kia Soul GT will get 33 mpg and do 0-60 in 6.5s :stirthepot:

I haven't timed it, but my jeep should be able to get that with the 5.3 ls. You gonna need at least 650 hp or more. Like a 16v-71 or Wright R-1820 Cyclone for that whale.

I get 18mpg driving too fast with the 5.3 in my XJ and 3.55 gears and that's 4000 lbs. Should be able to do that in the old Pontiac, but it would be ghey to put a 5.3 in it.

I haven't tested road mpg yet, but I know the 5.38s and fowdies make a big difference. The little trip computer said 13.2.
You're absolutely right. He needs 3 1.9 TDI's run in a W-block for peak efficiency. 2 wont be enough.

I would revamp the 455, do some fuel injection, and maybe get a BOP adapter for a 4L80E and you'd have a really neat cruiser that should get up really well. I don't know how nice the car is or what, maybe it's not worth it? Even a sweet new Q-jet and a 4l80e (or a 4l60e, honestly) with headgaskets and a cam would be a sweet setup without killing the bank.
6L80e/6L90e swap would be better.

My '75 k10 454 with an aluminum intake 600 holley and headers (otherwise stock) would smoke any (stockish) 5.3l truck. I have done it multiple times.
I would do a head job on the 455 if it were me.
Does it hop coke bottles?:flipoff2:

Keep the 455, your not gonna get the torque youve got under 3000 with an ls

Was running hot but I kept pushing it. Original 1973 radiator. Stupid serves me right. Now overheats on freeway and white vapor from exhaust (no matter how warmed up).

Trying to determine if worth the effort, or put that money towards an LS swap and a 4l80e. This 3 speed sucks on the highway, and started leaving drips.

The grand prix is a heavy car, but I would like it to move, I mean really move. Putting a new front sway bar on, bilsteins, big brake kit later. Figure for the weight, 450hp/550tq would be the great.

I dont want a high strung fragile engine, would liie to be able to drive it often, long distances, etc. All motor 455 may not be worth the work from what I read.

Needs some torque, not 8000rpm redline. Whats the better way to go? Or will I be 15-20k in and should just change the head gaskets and rock on for a while?
Ever hear that a fair number of BOP vehicles had a 455/TH400 stock? Or that the one used in the Buick GSX had the highest torque output stock from the factory with the stage 1 factory mods in 1971. In part it was from a factory installed high lift cam but there are other reasons as well.

A quick little spec ditty as stated by Buick with most folks saying they mellowed the number down to avoid hassles with insurance companies...or so the story goes anyway.

Engine: 455cid/7.46L V8

Transmission: Turbo Hydramatic automatic

Engine output: 360 bhp, 510 ft/lbs torque @2800 rpm

Performance: 0-60mph 6.0 seconds; quarter mile 13.38 seconds; top speed 115 mph

Headgaskets, 4l80, BIG aluminum radiator with electric fans. Entropy?
