Back in the 80’s I used to go to rendezvous and do the shooting matches. I haven’t been to one since the early 90’s and thinking about going again. Most of the ones held around me are gone now so it would be a couple three + hour drive to one I know of.

I didn’t get a deer on firearms season this year so three of us are going to use black powder firearms for alt season.

I’m not a fan of the inline Guns and prefer old school style. I shoot percussion cap and that’s about as old school as I want to go. Oddly enough this is the first time I’ve hunted with black powder firearms.

Sort of but not really. I have zero interest of being “old school” and bow hunt. However I drew a muzzleloader elk tag and sambar tag two years ago so I bought a CVA Wolf. I shoot Blackhorn 209 loose power with Thor 300 gr bullets. I put an Eabco peep rib deal on top with a Leupold 2-7 scope in QR rings. This setup is legal everywhere except the PNW, I can take the scope on and off without needing to Re-zero it depending on regs.

Missed a cow elk with it due to the peep being too small to see through in the dark timber on an evening hunt, almost killed a hog with it this year but didn’t have a “clean” shot so I passed. Would have gone in through the rear ham/guts but I sort of wish I’d have taken it as the bullets are seriously wicked.

Have a inline T/C impact. It’s dead accurate at a 100 yards with whatever brand cheap scope came with it. I plan on taking it out for our late muzzleloader season in Jan.

I have a cheap inline a buddy sold me for $50
and it needed parts. I took it out a few times and mercy killed a starving yearling. I’d like to take it back out for a late hunt this year.

Setting out in the woods finally. Had some trouble with one of my buddies rifle. He’s got a CVA and for what ever reason it wouldn’t run on my FFg pyrodex powder. He went and got his FFFg pyrodex and it would shoot ok with that. Typically it’s FFg for above .50 cal and FFFg for .45 cal and smaller.

He let me try some of his sabots out. Never shot those before. It hits harder and does well at 100 yards. So I thought I’d try it out hunting tonight.

i shoot flintlocks, got a 50 and 58 cal.
going to build. a couple cap locks.
i shoot roundball, and huntwith them.

I've got a Hawken clone. Fun, but I don't shoot it much due to cleaning.

Really want a flintlock blunder buss and a revolver. Just not high enough on the list vs the price yet

Cleaning isn’t really too bad imo. Bucket of hot soapy water (dawn) and plunge away. Doesn’t take but several passes with a few patches.

pretty much no more effort then cleaning a modern firearms really

Your assuming I clean the modern ones

Well I sucked at my fire deer hunt with my black powder rifle this morning. Ran a couple cleaning patches and then dry ones through it last night. But I forgot to clear it out with couple of caps this morning before loading it up. Yep, you guessed it. It missed fired when I had a big doe in my sights. So I took videos and photos of her. She stomped and snorted trying to figure out what I was She ran up the hill with her little one in tow and stood up there watching me for a long while. Finally she bolted off into the woods white flag up and snorting. My hunt is done this weekend and we’ll see how next weekend goes for us weather wise.

I got to the range once to test out my new to me smoke pole. Nipple was clogged. I did manage to get it cleared but it was a total PITA.

Mines more muzzle loader than black powder gun. It's a Remington 700 that I converted with an Arrowhead remage barrel. .45 cal that uses IMR4198 to shoot a 300 grain ELR bullet. It shoots out to about 700 yards. I haven't tried farther yet.

I have a screw tip for the fiberglass rod I took to the farm that screws into a ball or sabot to pull it out. No big deal really. I use it to unpack all the powder also.

always carry theses various picks and tools with muzzleloader

I didn’t take anything out with me other then my rifle. Next weekend I’ll be bringing my possibles with me. I have a HD aluminum ram rod that screws together in sections that’s made for black powder rifles. It has a T handle at the top. I bought it back in the late 80’s too.

I have a hot shot nipple on my rifle which is pretty cool. It has a cross drilled tiny holes through the sides of the nipple towards the top of it. It blows the sides of the cap so it’s no problem removing what’s left of the cap.

gets nipple pick,
also snap a cap before loading.

Point the firearm at the grass (unloaded but with cap) and snap. If grass moves you are good.

I've got two ACW repros that I use reenacting . A 53 Enfield and a 61 Springfield, both .58 cal. I've done some target shooting as well. A man sized silhouette is not hard to hit. I would not want to have had to stand in front of one!

How's the prices/availably for black powder ammo right now. I've been wanting to get some black powder stuff but never did.

easy to get
seen #11 percussion caps around
pyrodex is abundant.
round balls, maxims and Buffalo balls all in stock
.58 cal round balls are a little harder to get. but very few use those for hunting.
my .58 flintlock is my go to gun.

It's basically a poor boy with a nice piece of wood. A local legend built in the early 70s best he could remember. He hadn't seen it in 20 years when I walked in with it. He had traded it off to another guy I got it from.

i like the poor boy steel hardware.

I like the look of that plain metal with the figured stock.
