What's new

Best hard tail MTB for $500 or under?

id really suggest buying something no older than 5yrs. im riding stumpjumper from 2011, its 26" wheels with a 3x9 drivetrain. parts are getting hard to find, its outdated from a geometry standpoint.

Right now its just for fun. I would eventually like to hit some local bike park trails but im not gonna go nuts. I'm 40 years old.. i can't go too crazy 🤣. I did adjust the brakes a bit on my walmart bike the other day, and tweaked a few more things. Im gonna take it for a ride tomorrow to see how it does.

I thought that too (and I'm even older), before i got my new bike. Now I'm clearing table tops at the park. Granted, only the small ones, and just barely, but still...

All good advice above. Try for newer geometry, 27.5s rock, always try for the better shock. Air > spring a that price point. Disc mandatory, preferably hydro.

Best deal I saw new was the Vitus Nucleus, but it's only mail order and heavy back order.

If you joined pinkbike just to shop bikes, good luck. Most sellers won;t even respond if you don;t have much forum presence.

Scrolling through fb marketplace and came across a 2014 specialized rock hopper 29er with a medium frame, and the guy only lives 10 minutes from me.. for $500 I might have to go look..

just placed an order for a new bike, should ship the end of the month. if you want my old stump jumper its all yours for the cost of the ride. rear hub is on its way out, rear derailleur will need to be adjusted, brakes could use a bleed, and the front tire should be replace soon. the front derailleur has been abandoned so its a 1x8. it aint pretty but will your riding experience will be better spending a couple hundred on this than buying a $500 hardtail.

This i could definetly be interested in! I'm not sure on the logistics or cost to get it shipped but I dont mind putting in a little work to make it rideable!

I'm working on getting my wife to understand this is a deal I cant pass up. Ill pm you in a bit!

Since that StumpJumper DOESN'T have a rear thru axle I'm assuming it is a 26" wheel. I have a 26" rear wheel ( fresh Swiss DT350 6 bolt hub, hubba hubba :)) ) that I will NEVER use (no one reputable makes a 26" mtb anymore) you can have for the cost of shipping should you decide to get that bike shipped to you...

(how the fawk do I do a double quote now without doing all the extra typing???)

thats simple, get your current turd shined up. when i get my bike, you sell yours. the sell should fund shipping and the rear wheel from FrankenToy. no money removed from the budget, hard for her to object.

QR 26er

(hit quote on all the stuff you want, then scroll back up to the top and hit reply in the upper left)

Picked up a Giant Talon 29er right at the beginning of the coronashit for right at 500 and i like the bike, but I'm no pro. I use it on trails around the house to try to get my fat ass in shape.

my new ride showed last week, whats the word?

Due to some stuff that was beyond my control, I'm not going to be able to jump on this right now. I know someone mentioned that they wanted dibs if I passed, so feel free to have them jump on it if they still want it. I appreciate the offer, and wish I could do it, but had some stuff come up so buying toys isn't in the cards right now.

If OP does not want the old bike, is it up for grabs? I would love to drag my wife or a friend out on some rides with me.
