So, since I didn't get any responses on the shop and tools forum here it is again since GCC gets more traffic. I will be ordering this tomorrow since I need to finish up my interrupted projects.

I smoked my bench grinder and need to replace it. I bought this one probably 15-20 or so years ago so I got my money's worth out of it. It's not made anymore so I can't just buy the same one again.

Looking to stay the same size so I can use the wheels etc, so 8" with 5/8" arbor.
Under or around $300 would be nice and in the 1hp range.

looking at this Jet industrial 8". https://www.jettools.com/us/en/p/ibg...grinder/578008

A Baldor would be nice but $1200 is pretty damn steep,

Also I"m going to make a stand for it and my belt sander. I was looking online at various stands and they are from 28-36" tall at the mounting location for the tool. That seems too damn short like I'd be bending over to work at it. I'm no Brimmstone, but 48" seems to be a better height IMO. What heights are have you made your stand to? I'm just using an old steel 17" wheel, some 2x2 tubing and a piece of 1/4" plate to make them.

I'd find a used Baldor or some other old USA made one over the Jet. It doesn't say anywhere on the site where it's made, so I'm assuming China.

baldor 1/3hp will have more power than a 1hp chinese grinder
they are rated in electrical draw and not actual power output

I can lean into my 1/3hp baldor decently hard where the 3/4hp chinese grinder I keep a white wheel on on for edge finishing will not take any amount of pressure to slow down to a stop

oh and you will not find a decent used one on craigslist, at least around here they're one of few things that never goes for reasonable money
just buy a new one off whatever site is cheapest, and spend the extra couple bucks to get the one with cast wheel guards rather than stamped

I saw a single used Baldor on CL that they were asking $600 for and it looked like it was salvaged from the Titanic. If I can get one for the $300 range and it lasts as long as the last that was half that price I’ll be happy. I can’t drop 1200 or so ona grinder as much as I want to. The jet I was looking at was made in Taiwan FWIW.

I have no idea how they've made it so fucking hard to buy a brand new one, they are like 350-400 brandy fucking new for the 1/3hp 6" one but all I can find are the 1/2hp red painted 7" ones
did they close their factory for this whole panic bullshit?

ETA: says discontinued on all three of their 1/3hp models on their site. WTF? Those were like THE cheap bench grinder to buy

I've been kinda looking for one for my shop for a couple weeks. Read this thread, looked on Marketplace, was the first of 9 to message within 10 minutes of listing, went and picked it up. Weird.

Thanks for the reminder, Wheelerfreak!

You're welcome:flipoff2: I don't do Facebook so no MP for me. My choices are word of mouth and craigslist.

I have one just begging for a loose piece of clothing so it can rip your arm off.
