time for a new hiking daypack/general use for the beach, amusement parks, etc as mine is pushing 20yrs. any other brands i should be considering?

needs
  • 3l hydration
  • if it has hip support storable or removable
  • large main opening. the only real complaint about the current one is that the opening is small and often meaning emptying everything to get to the bottom
  • black or non tactical color option

current one is a ketly whitney. its simple two small pockets and one large pocket. the side pockets were useful but are now all stretched out they dont hold much.

current front runner
Redwing 30 Tactical - this is the current front runner. it simple

the two smaller outer pockets are a little too tactical for my simplistic liking for

Skyline 23 Pack | MYSTERY RANCH Backpacks - unsure if this one is big enough, need to get my hands on one somewhere to see

I've become a Mystery Ranch fan because they fit me really well. But any of the 30-35L bags from good brands will work as long as they fit your torso well.

For that much water I use a HydrationPak (mountain biking MAG7 or Poison Spider or anywhere else way out there). For not-mountain biking I use a Maxxpedition (sp?), lots of storage but less than 3L water.

I’ve got a couple Tough Travelers that I’ve been happy with. Made in the USA and you can pick non tactical colors. They’re not flashy but they are sturdy.

London Bridge Trading. Made in the US with a lifetime warranty. Same company that makes the packs for our military. To hell with spending that much on a Chink made bag.

X2 on Mystery ranch, they will come with different size for torso differences

they are a little pricey, but i like the simplicity

the lack of webbing is nice on the slick

youtube tube reviews on the LBT stuff has sent me down a rabbit hole

Ive got a jansport queer ass backpack that i hate that wont tear up so i keep using it

I'm cheap, still rocking a kelty. I think im on #3 now. I never put anything bigger than a beer coozy in the stretchy pockets so they still look new.

Hill people Gear has good stuff

I grabbed a Connner pack few weeks ago. Bigger then what I was really wanting but it's a nice pack. Love those harnesses.

Totally not what you are looking for:laughing:.....But I have a stone glacier 40/56 with a Krux frame that I'm about to put up for sale

thank you for all the suggestions. the kelty is still the front runner at this point as i everything else just doesnt jump out at being awesome and need to do more research before dropping treefifty on a pack.

i really want to go with the LBT 3day because of the little shelf space under the outer pocket. i plan on a doing an overnight or two in the sierras and that would be the perfect spot for a bear canister but the lack of back ventilation kills the deal for me as i sweat a lot. if i know how to sew i would buy a cheap backpack with a good back vent setup and make my own, but i dont so yea.

Another option that is up at the quality of Mystery Ranch is Kifaru.

Shape Charge - if they sold this in black i think wed have a winner.
