Hey folks,

Looking at a couple of ideas for reserve water supply = 1,000 gal tank which would be filled from the well during 'wet' seasons and/or a tank to catch rain water. That water would sit for months at a time (more?) before use, should I be looking at some sort of UV or as long as we keep the tank clean periodically it's all good?

For consumption as well as normal grey water use? Growing up on a cistern we just used bleach when the water started to smell and would add city treated water a couple times a year. Bought 'city' water to drink. Above ground or buried tank? You are going to want a buried tank to keep the water cool to limit growth. 1000 gallons isn't much reserve depending on intended use. On about a 3k gallon tank now and have to refill it about every 4 months, but it gets treated water dumped into it.

I got a couple 55 gallon drums from work. The barrels had Alum in them, it’s used by the community water treatment facility. I keep them filled incase we have a power outage so we can flush the toilets saving the potable water for consumption (well tank can gravity feed for a while). We haven’t had an extended power outage since we’ve been on the property, but I have a generator if needed

I've got a brook with running water. Two brooks in the Spring time. :grinpimp:

I have a 2k gallon cistern. My well pumps into it.

I have a 1750 gallon poly tank buried in the hillside above my house. It’s gravity fed where I piped it down from a natural spring. Our house water is drawn from the 1750 gallon tank and it goes into a large pressure tank to run the house. it still leaves me with decent pressure during a power outage being above my house by about 15’.
I bleach the tank water every 3 months or so even though we continually draw out of it.
Most of the year my tank has water coming out the overflow. With our current drought it’s still staying full most of the time.
We have a water cooler for drinking water.
The 1750 capacity wouldn’t last all that long with 6 people in the house.

We have 2 windmill powered wells for the cattle and a 3 acre pond. I need to re-run the water pipe from the one well to the house just in case. It hasn't been used in 30 years.
