Audiophiles (amateur) - Need advice

Update!

I was looking to replace my CD carousel player:

  • CD player: Technics MASH SL-PD647 CD carousel player.

I found a used one local to me a while back (newer model, $50). Perfect.

Ripping all my CDs was always easy. Was only half way through my hard CD library in the OP, now all digitized. Done.

I put those with my downloaded digital albums I've bought from before and since, and saved playlists from Spotify/whatever, etc.

My next thing was how to pipe these digital files to my home stereo setup, NOT FAWKING STREAMED! Something I could wire in, no network/TV/player BS.

Doc had some good tips, but he's on a much higher level of audio and equipment existence from where I'm standing: all the ripped/downloaded files I have are in high quality lossless format (FLAC and others). I'm a DAC and audio equip noob.

Side note: if you have Spotify (paid), it'll "save" your lists for offline listening, and it stores it in a "super secret" location on your device, right? But the quality depends on the bandwidth of the device you used. Meaning: on your phone probably lower quality, PC would be higher. I found a program (not free, but cheap enough) that will download your Spotify lists (or any other service for song/artist you like) in whatever format you want. --> Musify. https://itubego.com/music-downloader/

So, I looked into this again, what a fucking pain in the ass. After much pain (and seeing 1000s of people asking the same question: "Why is this so fucking hard!?!) Logitech had the product everyone needed called Squeezebox Touch (2010), but got discontinued.

Think I found something that might cover what I'm trying to do, though:

Guess I'll find out. Will report back.

OSMC and a rasberry pi with a small touchscreen.

run the OS from the SD, plug in external drive with media.
cost you $200. Do anything you ever needed it to.

Funny thing is, I have two R-PIs sitting idle (from work). I have no clue on running a screen for it.

Thanks for the link!

With the above player, if I ever lose my mind and get into WRX' again, I'll have some tunes I can carry with me. :emb:

if you use the official Rpi screen the drivers are baked into the OS.

volumio might be a better choice for you if you don't need or want the abilities of OSMC/KODI.
They have a plugin that supports the official RPI touchscreen with pretty much no effort.

Cool, thanks for that.

I'm technical, so no worries about getting that shit to work.

Although I didn't know about this, I can see how it'll work perfectly.

The 2 PI I have for free (from the company) was because they were useless (sourced by one of our guys) for what I was doing: I was modifying VPN source (Strongswan) for our own custom keying system, and it turns out the PI chips don't have licenses for the on chip 'die" that does hardware aes256 processing/acceleration.

It'll be cool to do this. You've got me interested now.

I use KODI on an old PC with an airmouse/remote/keyboard combo. Have since forever. When KODI was still XBMC.

I had volumio setup on a Pi I was tinkering with last year and it was pretty solid, but it just wasn't fit for my purpose so I stuck with KODI.
KODI performance on a Pi 3 was lackluster and I have old PCs laying about.

Lucky you've already got some Pi's laying around, they've been impossible to find for over a year with the chip shortage. I have a couple projects I've been wanting to do with them, but not for the absurd scalper prices on ebay/amazon.

If you have (had) a MASH player by Technics, chances are it didn't shit the bed. I have one, lasting to this very day because they are easily serviced.

Two square drive belts, that's the tune-up regimen on them. And cleaning the eye, lubing the tracks. They are good units. Matsushita was the affordable king back then. :cow:

Huh. I still have the old one.

I'll see if I can find some info on repair. (I surprisingly found the replacement within 20 minutes, and for $50, I didn't think twice).

Post-edit: found it after 2 days. Auto-cocksucker strikes again.

PPS: I'm gonna fucking falcon punch my brother for fucking with me. See above. :homer::laughing:

Necro thread revival. I’m an audio newb amateur. How do I mimic new vehicle audio quality in my old shit box SUV.

I don’t need the loudest sound around but I want it loud clean and clear. My phone plays pretty well on my new superdutys but my tired old stereo in the 93 ford Centurion sounds like trash. 15 year old Alpine deck. Unknown speakers in the doors, probably ford factory paper cone trash and that’s why they’ve been blown for years. 10” Kicker sub in the appropriate size sealed box with the right kicker amp for it. The sub is the only part of the stereo that sounds good.

Do I need to replace the deck along with the speakers? Or are there speakers that won’t be an embarrassment in my loud old big block truck?

Sound deadening for the interior all over helps everything.

For $100-150 you can get a newer head unit with far more control than your older one, may or may not be worth it to you. I'm pretty happy with the JVC and Kenwood that I've got this year, both replacing older units.

Replace the speakers in the front doors, drive them with an amp as well.

Play around with the tuning of it all for a bit, it'll help it sound cleaner louder and softer if it's balanced.

I'd start with sound isolation first, floors, firewall, doors, should get you some good results. Then the speakers,
whatever Project Twin recommends, then lastly replace the head unit and or amps

Get newer front stage speakers first.

Then reassess.

Provience got an F on his install so heed that much :lmao:

Overcoming the obstacle of cheap to still end up with decent sound is the real challenge :flipoff2: anybody can do it with fist falls of cash

FYI, that gold thing doesn't go there.

You're welcome.

I wasn't willing to spend the extra $5 for the actual jack, so now it's just got the 1 rca plug :rasta:

Edit: I was also able to get the input sensitivity/gain to make a change on the ohm meter after extensive cleaning, so that'd be nice if it comes back around once hooked up as well

I used to rock a Sony ES9 5 disc player, made a couple audio nerds best 5 disk carousel made lists (circa 2000). I miss that mofo. Add that to your list of replacements when the player dies again. Was $600 in '95 money, god only knows what they fetch these days.

I’m all newb, nothing but the newb. But why TF would I want that VCR house sized thing inside my truck?

Not a great thread, but a newb focused thread for car stuff
