You tube popped up with a video the other day of a very realistic looking JL on 37s crawling over a computer mouse. I have been out of the rc crawler stuff for a while and hadn't seen the little stuff. The video also showed a sweet 4runner.

:grinpimp: I was dead set on getting a couple for myself and the kids, until I looked them up and they were $199  and they use fucking aaa batteries.

Buuuut, the Axial version came up for just over $100 depending on model.

For size reference, they really do fit in you hand.

The fun part is that at only $110 ea, you can pick up a few to play with the kids. The parts for when they break are also that much cheaper.

We were able to make a little course in the yard way easier since you don't need very big rocks. The downside is that a leaf or pine needles can get you stuck  after market is pretty decent and again, pretty cheap compared to the bigger stuff.

I've never been able to get into the mini stuff. I guess I'm lucky to live in an area that has killer terrain so I never get bored with the 1:10 scale rigs.

The price of admission on those is cheap enough though so if the kids don't get into it so much you aren't out 10x that.

I'm with you, I was in it back when most crawlers were 1/8th scale monster truck based. Which is kinda too big, and expensive. 1/10th is really perfect, but like you said, it's easy to be $600+ into one, especially with all the neat stuff out these days. Most people end up with double that. I got out of it when the $150 "buy once cry once" electronic started breaking.

Maybe I've been out of it for a while, but these things are actually pretty capable and really fun. Our little course is like 6' x 4' and has tons of good lines. Took like 30 mins to build, 1/10th would be be 10x's that.

The "badass" servo upgrade for these is $8  the last one I bought for my 10th was $130.

$600? Bitch please I think I have 1 with less than $1k into it, most are nearly $2k and they aren't vanquish dollhouse pageantry bullshit either. They all get beat on like dinner is 10 minutes late and she just talked back.

If you decide to get back into 1:10 I'm a rather good resource having spent a lot of time prototyping, designing and reviewing things for a few companies in that world so I can point you to the best bang for the buck stuff.

The smaller stuff is capable for what it is, these days 1:10 is straight up capable. This is my main sporty, El Pinko.

Like I said, easy to $600 in, most are double that and obviously some are over that.

We just came down to the spot we used to crawl 1/10th scale stuff. Looking at some of lines we could pull, these little ones don't seem so impressive  but out of the box, no wheel or axle weights they're fun. It's also fun since every one is on an even playing field. There is infinitely more lines for little guys in a much smaller area also.

But I'm also remembering why I got out of it. I got 2 Wed and a 3rd Sat morning, I don't think they've all worked at the same time  Axial makes OK stuff, but somehow kinda shitty at the same time.

SCX24 I think it is, I'm looking to get a pair for kiddo and I. I'm going to have to wait though. I bought him an r/c excavator thing, and it freaks him the fuck out. Not a big fan of it.

I have the axial one with a HH revolver motor and CC mamba micro esc going in.

It’s a fun addition to my crawlers.

Have a Losi crawler with simialr. Haven't got it out much to play with but need to. I hate one of the mini baja racer trucks that was fun but it broke.

The SCX24 are really popular in my Hobby shop. I have sold more of them than anything else this winter. The SCX24 probally have the most upgrades of any of the 1/24 truck on the market currently. And many more things coming for them.

Small crawlers are meh to me. They are too light and don't react realistically. I built a 1/6 scaled JK that weighed somewhere around 40-45 lbs. The suspension and handling realism was cool.

Ia the wheelbase on these about right for a model car. If you could put a model truck body on one you could have a very realistic scale crawler.

They're a little big for a model car body, they end up looking like an 80's show truck.

I have a Proline Ambush 1:24 an a couple of the WPL models. The WPL are more 1:16-1:18 and a little better outside but the build quality is pretty rough. My kid has the pickup (c24) model, you gotta buy a kit and build it yourself to get the good tires, and that way you can do things like metal gears and drivelines right off the bat instead of breaking them and having to take it back apart. The FJ (C34KM) can be had with all the metal shit from the factory but there is still fitting/filing/cussing to do. If you've ever built a Japanese RC car kit you'll be frustrated with the quality. You can easily double or triple the cost of the WPL kits with metal parts and bearings but I'm into both of them less than $150 WITH electronics and a battery.

The Ambush is the little Scout looking guy in the middle, it's too bad they're an orphan with no real aftermarket. Worm drive axles, leaf sprung. Added some lead, swapped out batteries and made a flat belly for it and it does really well. The best part about the minis is you can run em anywhere, I drive the Ambush over shit on my work bench as much as I take it outside.

Man I hope these things aren't going to keep breaking like they have been. Probably only have 6 or so hours on them and it seems like one is constantly broken. Been through a motor already and I'm thinking maybe a 2nd. The one that has a new motor has no crawl, it doesn't want to really move untill you give it a lot of throttle, then it just goes. One has a stripped servo (probably thanks to the 2 year old)

I know rc's break, but usually you get a least a few weeks out of a new one.

How much did that cost

The big ones are cool untill you run out of places to wheel because all the same obstacles are too small.

I have a few tenth scale cars and 2 of the scx24's. Only one of the scx24's still works and the kids want a tenth scale one to be able to try the same lines I do. Just finished up building a G-speed chassis with portals and plan to get the old car running for the kids.

I think that is the reason most people don't like the small stuff, when you try to wheel with a bigger crawler it isn't that fun imo, it's only fun when they're all similar sized. If everyone has 24th or everyone has 10th, it's fun.

Anyone remember the og Walmart crawlers? There was a orange jeep with a blue cage and a yellow scorpion. They were probably ~16th scale and were pretty shitty, but when 3 or 4 of us all had them it was a blast.

When I was younger I had the losi trail Trekker which is basically the same thing as the scx24. I had the most fun with that thing making courses in the sandbox at my parents house. I would put plastic under some parts so they would hold water, and add other obstacles like small rocks, etc.

I had an SCX24 that I got last year. Thing was lots of fun playing around with during the winter when we weren't out wheeling and held up surprisingly well to my 5 year olds "Learning" with it. It was "just" big enough to play with in the yard without getting stuck in the grass.

I wound up selling it off as I was planning on going up in size, but eventually lost interest in the RC thing again (this was round #4 for me). If I wind up with more stuff to play on around the house when I finish up the landscaping, I may pick up another one to pay around with.

I bought one of those for my boy. Broken within a couple days. Not really repairable like the bigger/name brand stuff.

I do not recommend.

I wondered if that was case, price seemed to good to be true.

Bought a Losi Trekker way back when. Was fun as I just had a stack of rocks in the corner of my home office to fuck around on but I lost interest and now it just sits on my desk holding down papers.

And just because they are small doesn't mean they don't get you in the wallet, as I'm looking on mine wearing a YJ body with aluminum beadlocked wheels and Iroks on it haha.

How much to throw one togeather for me that I probably wont break and ship it to ca?

I'd love to put one together, but i am in Canada and with the taxes and exchange it could get pretty spendy compared to what you could get locally to you.

Do it yourself. It will cause you nothing but frustration to have paid someone to put a rig together only for it to still break (not due to their abilities or skills) down the road. Just get a parts list and build it yourself.

It's an axial so brass knuckles, aluminum c hubs, metal driveshafts, all upgraded electronics and sticky tires are enough to get the party started.

nope pay someone to do it then fix as it breaks. I got enough crap to work on and build from nothing. Doing another thing that is supposed to be fun isn't fun.

Really? You don't have 5 mins to screw in a new motor that costs $12?

Last rc I had before these I actually went in search of a kit. It used to be you put your rc together before you played with it, then you literally knew every part on it. I'm not a very patient guy, but the rc stuff isnt that time consuming untill you get into full tune chassis builds.
