Since opening the hobby shop, i have been getting into all parts of the hobby business. Lately i have been wanting to get back to what started me in all this, building 1/24 scale models. I don't build as fast as i used to. but my skills i have are coming back.
This build was for a online fun comp It started as a old trashed revel 1/24 kit i had gotten in a parts lot. It wasn't in great shape when i started so i didn't mind cutting it up.

Last one I did was a 59 Impala convertible I made to look forgotten in a field. That was back in high school.

My oldest son got me a 70 Chevelle model for Christmas, so I need to start working on it.

Many years ago...
I did build an flying plane (balsa wood & tissue paper kit) which crashed on the first day :mad3:

Also did build box kites & flying them.

Estee rockets too 🚀

Building with wood required adding, counting & precise measurements before cutting. And white glue to put it together-

Used to spend all my money as a kid on model cars, won some prizes at the state fair in the cub scouts exhibit with a thirtys Ford wrecker and a Jag XKE I broke and then glued back together. I had the jag on the hook being towed by the wrecker.
Quit after I got old enough to start working on the real thing, went looking around a couple of years ago like everything else the prices have gone up, then there are all the accesories, paint, glue and it would be prohibtive to get back into it

I was seriously in to it when I was a kid. I built mostly cars and a few fighter jets. I still have most of them. I'd get stupid with painting the details with tips of toothpicks. I never did get an airbrush, but asked for one pretty much every birthday and christmas. I stopped as I got older and other interests took over. I've wanted to get back into it, but never seem to make the time for it.

Turn on the way back machine for me. Some 40 years ago I ended up with a giant cardboard box of opened and tossed car and truck models. just pieces no paperwork or pics etc., had a lot of fun building frankensteins for a few years.

I too did the box kites and rockets and enjoyed those as well. I may just build another box kite just to see if I can still do it.

I was totally into it as a kid. And slot car racing.

I'd build 1/25 and 1/32 scale. The smaller ones would get super paint detailed and then every July 4th would blow them up and burn them. Go figure.

1/25 (no 1/24 b/c Monogram sucked; Revell ruled) I liked to super detail. I think my best was a AA/FA with a Fiat body. Engine had a dipstick and if you pulled it out there was oil in the crankcase. Rod & Custom Models was my bible. Yay Don Emmons and Bob Braverman. There was an old scratchbuilding dude, too, forget his name. Manuel Olive was a Spaniard who scratch built uber-accurate 1/8" scale Ferraris and motorcycles. Remember him making a scale motorcycle chain out of hypodermic needles.

Slots were 1/24, 1/32, and HO. Had a cheater control for the local slot car track races. Controller wire casually drooped down to my tool box. Inside was a motorcycle battery wired to give extra voltage running and reverse voltage slowing down. Biggest issue was keeping the car from creeping backwards when the cars were lined up on the starting line. Never got cought.

Good times.

Did the balsa+paper planes with my dad along with kites

Did estes rockets as well. Still remember when i got my permit for the bigger "D"? stage engines for multiple stage rockets

Did slotcar racing at "The Race Place" at collingswood auction until it burned

Also did all the models of dragsters/funnycars they sold at raceway park.

I used to go to the local Hobby Shop and browse for hours at the D&D lead figures and modules

Good luck with your shop. You'll be making memories for kids

Ive built quite a few, mostly Ford pickups.

Ive got more, just too lazy to post them right now.

Back when the lockdowns went into effect at the start of the beer flu I ordered a few models to keep me occupied. Did a General Lee, a 71 Charger, and a couple of Star Trek ship models. namely the Defiant and the NX-01 Enterprise.

pretty sure they are still in a box out in the yet to be started man cave.

I build models as a kid, mostly jets. Did the Estes rockets. Had a tyco slot car track in the basement and change it up when I got more pieces of track to add to it. Built a bunch of crap out of Legos. Lost interest in most of it when I got into rc cars, then real cars. I'd like to get back into it.

Used to build a lot of model cars, light em on fire and roll them down a hill. That ended tragically.:frown:
We had a four lane slot car track in the basement, spent hours and hours on that.
Did the Estes rockets for a long time too.
Pandemic I bought a Revell car to assemble, it's still in the bag:lmao:

Incredible! Did I spot the infamous (and unsellable) blue car with a green interior?

I used to build 1/48th scale planes as a kid, hung them from my ceiling.

My mother threw them all out, when I enlisted in the Army at 16.5 with her signature.

I started buying them all again. I have about 60 kits waiting for me, when I have time to start building them.

I am still looking for a 1/48th scale B-36 Peacemaker. I found vacuum molded ones, but they're 1600.00:lmao:

I did the slot cars at home, the first set (Aurora?) was tracks put together w/metal rods & clips. I got a bigger set from Tyco which the tracks had prefab clip to slide sideways to lock. It collapsed during a party & pretty much that was it...

Large scale slot car racing at various places for fun, rented controller & track time. Pops bought me a green dune buggy & kit to make a Midget racer but no electric motor was included so it sat for years-

I've got a grip of Revell and other plastic models still in their box. Wanted to get into them, but never really did.
On the other hand I've been into HO scale (1:87) model trains my whole life. Everything is ready to run so not much "building" of those models anymore.
I've started into 1:8 scale riding trains as well. Those are pretty much custom builds if you want to stay "affordable"

I've had an N scale set up (in boxes/storage) since about 1998... I envision it to be my grand kids project (don't have them yet)... and I want to do real steam G scale, outside.

Lady friend of my mom, had two large scale aircraft carriers her husband had built. We were never allowed to get near them so I have no idea who they were.
Boats and airplanes never really did anything for me, it was cars, pickups mostly 30 - 50s and some show cars like the Red Barron T bucket
