Part of the reason holding your own cash because you can't trust the banks isn't what it used to be. If shit really hits the fan, all that cash likely won't be able to buy anything.

No it's not.
Long story short that I know for a fact:
A of illegals work in Estes Park CO in various bars/restaurants. They all get paid with a check and take that to a certain Mexican grocery store and somehow cash it with no ID.
I have no idea how all these bars/restaurants are dealing with taxes for this, but it happens.

Ask the Canadian truckers. Gov absolutely can cut you off from your money. Ask the Russian oligarchs. Either it's yours or not. And if it's not then why should we collectively continue to pay taxes?
